Vandenberg AFB Hunting & Fishing

 

 

WHO CAN HUNT - Active duty, retired, and reserve military members; and prior active duty members who were discharged under the Voluntary Separation Initiative/Special Separation Benefit program (hereinafter referred to as VSI/SSB) who possess applicable service identification cards (as defined in AFI 36-3001, Issuing and Controlling of Identification Cards), Chumash Tribal Members, DOD civilian employees of Vandenberg AFB, NAF civilian employees of Vandenberg AFB, and AAFES civilian employees working on Vandenberg AFB. The base is closed to the general public.

Reserve military, VSI/SSB, Chumash Tribal Members, DoD personnel, NAF personnel, and AAFES employees must sign a 30 SW Form 112, Civilian General Liability Agreement, prior to hunting on Vandenberg AFB. Failure to sign a liability release will result in the immediate suspension of Vandenberg AFB hunting privileges.

Family members of active duty and retired military members who possess applicable dependent identification cards (as defined in AFI 36-3001).

WHAT YOU CAN HUNT - Deer, pigs, jackrabbit, rabbit, quail, dove, pigeon, ground squirrel, American crow, duck, coot, geese, turkey.

HUNT AREA - The base has 6 hunting areas with areas 1 and 1A for archery hunting only. Areas 2, 2A and 5 are restricted to shotgun with slugs and archery. The remaining areas are open to rifle, shotgun with slugs and archery. No handgun or crossbow hunting is allowed. Hunting is considered very good on this AFB.

HUNTING LICENSE AND FEES - You need a valid State of California Hunting License and applicable tags and stamps required for the particular species being hunted or sought.

You'll also need a valid 30 SW Form 216, Authority to Hunt on Vandenberg AFB, which is issued only by an authorized Vandenberg AFB Game Warden. The 30 SW Form 216 is valid for the following periods as indicated:

Archery Deer - All season
General Deer - One Day
Feral Pig - 30 Days
Small Game - 30 Days
Waterfowl - 30 Days
Special Hunts - As Required

A properly completed 30 SW Form 216, Hunting Permit, must be returned to the 30 SFS Fish and Wildlife Office, Bldg. 853, before or upon expiration. Failure to return the 30 SW Form 216 may result in punitive or administrative action to include the loss of hunting privileges. A valid Use Fee Stamp affixed to the State of California Hunting License. Use Fee Stamps may be purchased at the Base Exchange, Bldg. 10400, Community Loop, Vandenberg AFB, during normal business hours. A Use Fee Stamp for Small Game is required for all persons 16 years and older. All other species require Use Fee Stamps, regardless of the age of the hunter. Prices for Use Fee Stamps are as follows:

*NOTE: A fee of $.50 per use fee stamp is charged by the Exchange for handling and sales purposes. The asterisk (*) indicates price for active duty, retired, VSI/SSB, and reservists.

CAMPING/LODGING - There are 2 campgrounds, one with full hookups for RVs, showers and a rec room on Vandenberg AFB.

Space Available (Space A) reservations can be made by military active duty, reservists, military retirees and military families, Department of Defense (DOD) civilians on leave or incident to PCS, 24 hours prior to arrival for up to 3 days, provided the space is available. PCS DOD civilians do not have to check with lodging if they wish to reside in off-base hotels. Lodging guest must provide a valid credit card number at the time of making a reservation.

The Vandenberg Lodge office is the first point of contact for most people arriving on temporary duty (TDY) or permanent change of station (PCS) orders. Military and Civilian TDY and military PCS members can make reservations up to 6 months prior to arrival date. Military PCS members can make reservations for up to 30 days. Civilian PCS personnel may make space available reservations 24 hours in advance of their arrival, for up to three days. Vandenberg has 26 temporary lodging facilities, which serve families who are making a PCS move to and from Vandenberg AFB. PCS military personnel must check with the lodging office before making any arrangements to stay in off-base hotels. Lodging guests must provide a valid credit card number at the time of making a reservation.

River Park R.V. Campground Facility. River Park lies adjacent to the Santa Ynez River and is owned and operated by the City of Lompoc. It is the City's largest park with 60 developed acres and 190 acres of open space. The R.V. campground section of the park features full hookups, picnic tables, fire pits, hot showers, restrooms, a dump station, and a resident Campground Host and park Ranger. They day use section of the park has play equipment, an exercise path, volleyball courts, horseshoe pits, and a small lake which has been stocked with fish.

RESTRICTIONS - Hunting in the following areas is prohibited:

Special Interest Areas (formerly Key Wildlife Areas).
Specified Leased Lands.
Military Operations Areas.
Space Launch Complex 6 (SLC 6) Areas.
Any area otherwise posted "No Hunting".
All Housing Areas.
Base Cantonment Areas.
Base Firing Ranges.
Wildlife Viewing Sanctuary.
Rawlinson Pond (San Antonio West).
Waterfowl Natural Resources Area.
Peacekeeper/Rail Garrison Mitigation Wetlands.
Seasonal restrictions apply in some areas, as defined in Paragraph 8.2. of this instruction.

Discharge of any type of firearm in the following areas is prohibited:

Within 400 yards (1200 feet) of any explosive storage area or missile launch complex.
Within 400 yards (1200 feet) of the RV Munitions Storage Area located on 35th Street (1500 series buildings) and the Munitions Storage Area Magazines located on the west side of the runway on Tangier Road.
Within 200 yards (600 feet) of the antenna fields located near the intersection of El Rancho Oeste Road and Antenna Road, North Vandenberg AFB.
Within 500 yards (1500 feet) of any structure within East and West Housing areas to include the Trailer Park Area.

Within 800 yards (2400 feet) of Launch Facilities (LF) 03 and 06, North Vandenberg AFB. (NOTE: This restriction applies to the use of rifles. Shotguns and archery equipment are limited to 150 yards (450 feet).)
Within 300 yards (900 feet) of any building or activity within the Peacekeeper/Rail Garrison
Test Area or adjacent use areas.
Within 150 yards (450 feet) of any occupied/unoccupied building, dwelling, fenced or developed area, open construction site, base dump or any other facility on Vandenberg AFB.
Within 400 yards (1200 feet) of any building or structure at Vandenberg (Bishop) Tracking Station, located on Bishop Road, North Vandenberg AFB.
Within 400 yards (1200 feet) of buildings 944, 945, 946, and 947.
Hunters will not hunt within 150 yards of anglers using base lakes.

Hunters will not gut, field dress, skin or butcher any deer or game animal within 175 yards of public view.

During deer season, no hunting will be allowed within the confines of the Punchbowl Area. The boundaries are: Firefighter Road, Corral Road, the firebreak north of the Saddle Club, San Antonio West, and Highway 1. The remainder of the year the boundaries will be Corral Road, the firebreaks north and east of the Saddle Club, and the signs posted south of the Saddle Club.

Weapons (archery, guns) are prohibited within the confines of the Saddle Club area.

The following restrictions apply as indicated:

No person may operate any type of motor vehicle on grassy surfaces, excluding mission essential operations. Operate vehicles only on paved surfaces or maintained dirt roads. Firebreaks and railroad beds are not considered roads for the purpose of this instruction. If the grass/ brush touches the undercarriage of the vehicle the road is not authorized for vehicular use.

During deer season, all deer "drives" or "pushes" will be limited to a total of five people. Parties found in violation will have their hunting privileges suspended for not less than three days.

No person may enter or exit Vandenberg AFB other than from a manned entry control point (Base Gates).

For safety reasons, no one shall possess a loaded firearm in a vehicle or shoot from within or upon any vehicle, whether moving or stationary. For the purpose of this instruction, a loaded firearm is defined as any weapon with an unexpended round in the chamber or attached to any part thereof, including the magazine. However, muzzleloading firearms are not considered loaded if all powder has been removed from the flashpan, or the percussion cap has been removed from the nipple.

Archers, during archery season, may not possess a firearm while in the field engaged in archery hunting, or in their vehicle during transport to or from a hunting area, during the archery only season. Archers will not possess firearms or crossbows while hunting in Areas 1 and 1A. Archers possessing "Archery Only" deer tags will not possess firearms at any time.

Archery hunting is prohibited within 150 yards (450 feet) of buildings, taxiways, aircraft ramps, aircraft fuel storage areas, or any other occupied/unoccupied or enclosed area or facility in Areas 1 and 1A. 30SWI32-701 30 OCTOBER 1998 9

Handguns, rimfire rifles or crossbows, black powder pistols or revolvers, will not be used or possessed while hunting on Vandenberg AFB. Use is limited to authorized firing ranges only.

The use of buckshot ammunition, ball ammunition (armor piercing) or weapons using compressed air, gas or spring loaded devices capable of firing a projectile is prohibited.

Persons who do not possess a valid hunting permit (30 SW Form 216), shall not discharge a firearm within the confines of Vandenberg AFB except at authorized firing ranges in conjunction with a regulated or authorized activity.

The hunting of predatory or any non-game animals is prohibited within the confines of Vandenberg AFB.

Trapping and night hunting are prohibited on Vandenberg AFB. 6.3.12. No person shall transport or discharge any weapon, firearm, or bow while on bicycle, horseback, motorcycle, all-terrain vehicle, of any other means of conveyance or vehicle, while engaged in hunting or at any other time. No person shall transport any weapon, firearm, or bow, while on horseback, motorcycle, bicycle, or all-terrain vehicle, excluding mission essential operations.

The use of a telescopic sight attached to any firearm or bow to "scope" or survey an area other than to discharge a round or arrow during the take of an authorized game animal is prohibited.

No one shall release or transport live game or other wildlife for stocking purposes on Vandenberg AFB without written permission from 30 CES/CEVPN.

MAPS - Maps and guidance concerning authorized hunting areas are available from the Fish and Wildlife Section Office, Bldg. 853, from 0800-1600 Monday-Friday. During general deer season, Bldg. 853 will be manned on a daily basis throughout the period of the season.

SHOOTING RANGE - Vandenberg AFB Rod & Gun Club. Address: Bldg 1521. Phone: (805) 606-4560.

Hours: Monday: Closed. Tuesday: 4-8pm. Wednesday: 11am-2pm. Thursday: 4-8pm. Friday: 11am-2pm. Saturday: 10am-2pm. Sunday: 10am-2pm.

Club membership is open to all active duty, DoD personnel, base contractors, retired military and federal personnel. Family members and guests are also welcome when they are accompanied by a member.

The Rod & Gun Club operates modern, regulation lighted skeet and trap ranges adjacent to the clubhouse. A variety of amateur events are held during the year. These ranges are open during club operating hours, Saturday afternoons, and by appointment for non-operating hours. The club also has a 25, 50 and 100 yard range adjacent to the clubhouse for stationary target shooting.

Since Vandenberg AFB is an excellent place for bow hunting, the club operates an indoor and outdoor archery range. Whether you are honing your skills for hunting season or just enjoy target shooting, our facilities are the perfect spot for the avid sportsman, so take advantage of these great facilities and become a member of Vandenberg's Rod & Gun Club today.

HISTORY OF VANDENBERG AFB - Vandenberg Air Force Base is located on the Central Coast of California 12 miles north of Lompoc, CA. It is operated by the 30th Space Wing, and is the only military installation in the United States from which unmanned government and commercial satellites are launced into polar orbit. It is also the only site from which intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMS) are launched toward the Kwajalein Atoll to verify weapon systems performance.

Vandenberg's military service dates back to 1941, then known as Camp Cooke it served as an Army training facility for armored and infantry troops.

OTHER SIGHTS TO SEE -

La Purisima Mission State Historical Park. La Purisima Mission is truly, "A Place in Time". Of the 21 Franciscan Missions in California, it is oneof only three preserved within the State Park System. It is well known as the most fully restored mission, in its most original setting. The mission is located at 2295 Purisima Road.

Lake Cachuma. Located in the beautiful Santa Ynez Valley, Lake Cachuma was created by Bradbury Dam across the Santa Ynez River. The lake offers great fishing and camping, as well as "Eagle Watch" excursions.

Wineries. Over 35 wineries are a leisurely drive from Lompoc offering tasting opportunity and many offering tours.

Take a Tour & Ride though hundreds of acres of fragrant, colorful flower fields. As you drive through "Valley of Flower" you will see many patches of colors which will be varieties of cut flowers and those grown for seed. They include Sweet Peas, larkspur, Stocks, bells of Ireland, Bachelor Buttons, Bells of Ireland and a tall flower- Delphinium, among others. Also notice the vegetables such as asparagus, broccoli, lettuce, artichokes, cabbage, celery, spinach, kale, parsley, sugar beets and walnuts.
