Some Other Notes .... Installation was a breeze with no hang ups, the standard  Windows install wizard walks you right through the setup.  The user interface is not a Windows or MAC interface but unique to DeLorme. You CANNOT print the UTM grids without getting the additional software from DeLorme called "Map Tools", which is another $50.00. The 3-D map view is a slick feature that really shows the contour and layout of the area you are viewing. Printing of maps in 2-D and 3-D view on an Epson 640 inkjet from a Gateway 450 mhz Pentium III was impressive and timely. I  personally like lots of choices for icons and symbols in the draw mode like Terrain Navigator provides. Delorme comes up a little short in this department. Navigating around on the maps was easy even on the first try without using the tutorial. If you are new to mapping programs or computers, use the tutorial to get acquainted with the features first.

Customer service has been excellent with no complaints.

I use an E-trex, and TopoQuads, which is made by the same people as TopoUSA, I think. It works fine for me, plotting the waypoints on my Topo maps. You have to buy a data trasfer cable, which plugs into the Etrex, and into the back of your computer. - little delta.

I have the Delorme software. I can do and have done everything mentioned here. I can plot "good spots on screen" then those coordinates and wave points will be transferred over to my GPS so I can go to that spot in the field I Leave my GPS on and have it Track where I've been for the day, then I can come back home and download the track from my GPS onto my Map. This really helps to know How far am I to that road, to that meadow. or over to the ridge I was just on etc. With the 3d I use the Satellite imagery and look for old logging roads and crick beds that don't show up on maps. I also can see where clear cuts are with it. Makes it really nice. - Justin

Hands down, Delorme is the least expensive, clocking in at a mere $50 or so for multiple state coverage, and packs the most features for the price. But it does lack somewhat in detail, although it possesses several advanced editing features to offset that problem. It's pretty fair on providing minor forest road numbers as well. - Solo.

Hot Sign Lat26 .... Lat 26 has introduced a synthetic inkjet printer paper for topo maps that is tear proof and renders the ink waterproof. $26.95 for 25 sheets. The inkjet paper size is 8 1/2" x 11". For you peeps using DeLorme to print out maps, this is a godsend. Laminating the maps runs about the same cost ($1.00 per map), but if you put the maps back to back to laminate, lamination would be about half the cost ($.50) of this new printer paper. The paper is not listed on their website yet, so call 1 800-305-0036 to order. They also have the GPS/Topo Coordinator which is a plastic cartographic overlay using the Universal Transverse Mercator Projection (UTM).

SOME OTHER NOTES .... DeLorme released Topo USA version 4.0 on 4/10/02.

Installation was a breeze with no hang ups, the standard  Windows install wizard walks you right through the setup.  The 3-D map view is a slick feature that really shows the contour and layout of the area you are viewing. Printing of maps in 2-D and 3-D view on an Epson 640 inkjet from a Toshiba Pentium laptop was impressive and timely. The lack of UTM grids is a feature I miss since I use UTM in my GPS receiver. I  personally like lots of choices for icons and symbols in the draw mode like Terrain Navigator provides. Delorme comes up a little short in this department.

The maps used by this software are vector maps and not the USGS 7 1/2 minute topo maps we are all used to viewing on paper from the map store. The detail in the maps in Delorme TOPO USA 4.0 is okay for an overview but if you need to be able to find small landmarks like springs you need to get Delorme's 3-D TopoQuads™ which uses USGS 7 1/2 minute topo maps. Navigating around on the maps was easy even on the first try without using the tutorial. If you are new to mapping programs or computers, use the tutorial to get acquainted with the features first.

Customer service has been excellent with no complaints.

USER REVIEWS:

I went through this decision recently as well. I have a friend who has the state TOPO! software and I really like it. However, it really doesn't look any different than what you can get from Topozone for free. TOPO! has added some relief shading. I ended up getting the Rocky Mountain edition of Delormes TOPOUSA 3.0. It has slightly less detail, but not really that much, plus, If I need higher detail I can get that from Topozone. I bought it because it contained 5 states worth of data for $50 versus the 1 state of data at $99 for TOPO! TOPOUSA also has a 3D view. Some like it some don't. I happen to like it and it helps me to "map scout" new areas. Anyway, that is my $0.02. - _droptine_

SOME OTHER NOTES .... Installation was a breeze with no hang ups.  I use this program and it is the best one I have found to plot your tracks, waypoints and other map info. Maptech Terrain NavigatorMaptech's Terrain Navigator 4.05

Overview

Maptech's Terrain Navigator 4.05 is the latest release of their topo map viewing and navigation software. The earlier release was known as "TopoScout".  With "Terrain Navigator" 4.05 you can view, add notes and symbols, and print USA topo maps, along with  interface to your GPS unit to upload/download coordinates or waypoints, or track your movement in real time (moving map).

System Requirements

Features:

Some other notes .... Installation of Terrain Navigator 3.02 was a breeze, the standard  Windows install wizard walks you right through the setup. Then you install your CD-ROM for the topo map series you have. Terrain Navigator then asks you to remove your map CD-ROM and insert Terrain Navigator Installer CD-ROM again in drive so that it can load files for your topo map CD-ROM. It's a quick load, but annoying to swap CD-ROMS back and forth. You'll have to do this once for each new map series you obtain. A minor flaw on an otherwise outstanding product. I ran Terrain Navigator on a 450 meg Pentium III desktop with 128 meg of RAM with no problem. I then ran it on a Toshiba laptop with a 100 meg Pentium with 24  megs of RAM. I noticed a little slower response on the notebook when scrolling on the topo maps.

I like all the symbol choices you get for markers, there's even some for us hunters and fishermen. The GPS upload/download feature worked as advertised. I was not able to use the Real Time tracking (moving map), because I'm still using my old Magellan 4000XL, which does not support track plotting. I'll be upgrading shortly to a unit that does thank you very much. I really liked the  distance tool feature of projecting the square feet, acres, and square kilometers of a defined area by encircling it with the distance tool. This will come in real handy to quickly find the area of a location without walking it yourself. Navigating the map is a snap with a compass tool in the upper left you can click on to move, or use your mouse pointer and point on edge of map which direction you want to go in. Overview maps of which map your currently using, and adjoining maps are shown on the left of the active map.

Printing is an easy chore with many options of how you want your maps to look. MGRS (Military Grid Reference System), is an available option for a coordinate system if you have the need, Wildflower's TOPO and  Delorme's TOPO USA do not have this option available. Upgrades from earlier versions of Terrain Navigator are available for downloading from Maptech's website on the Internet. A demo is available too at their website to take a test drive before you buy. Customer service has been excellent with no complaints, which is a major check on my tally sheet for who has the best software to use.

Hey guys, I'm a toy freak, and I've tried them all. By far, the best out there is Terrain Navigator. It actually uses USGS topo images and it the most detailed. You can scale it any way you want, and you can add in your own features as necessary. Plus it has a whole host of icons that you can use to mark stands, game trails, etc. It also is seamless for the area you are navigating in. If you have ever used topo maps, you know that no way will you ever be able to get all the area you want to cover on one map... it always takes at least two maps... this software makes the USGS maps seamless. I use a Magellan GPS, but any of the GPS units will work just fine. I also use it for road/hiway navigation with the addition of a laptop computer. Like I said, I'm a toy freak, and I really enjoy messing with this mapping stuff... for a good comparison, you can log onto www.terraserver.com and look at satellite photos of the same areas. - Good luck, Slick.

I have the maptech terrian navigator and I like it pretty good. You can do that 3 d thingy too.The only thing I dont like is that I cant save it to a file unless its on the maptech cd.I cant email maps to people. But it has the whole east coast and national parks, its laid out in quadrangles, you can zoom, rotate, plan routes, use symbols on the map, measure distance in absolute and incremental steps from points. That really helps in finding quickiest routes to areas.;I gave like $149.00 for it.I have a delmore "HUnt and map its pretty good but not anything like maptech.HUntnmap is like animated maps.On the web i like terraserver better than maptech though. - ridgerunner#1.

Maptech is relatively reasonably priced at about $150 for an entire state, and provides identical data as USGS quad maps in a seamless format. From what I've seen, this program is found lacking when detailing minor forest road identification, but likely can be offset by the extensive built-in editing features. - Solo.

RETAILERS ....  REI  or you can order direct from  Maptech
Prices on complete state coverage $99.95, $149.95 for large states like California. Individual regions of a state average $49.95. 54 national parks including Alaska are available also. Individual park coverage CD-ROMs are $29.99, regional park coverage $69.99 or entire park map set for $179.99

Wildflower TOPO 2.2

Wildflower TOPOOverview

'TOPO' version 2.2 is scanned USGS topographic maps on CD-ROM with the capability for you to draw routes, add symbols and text, measure distance and direction, build elevation profiles, search for a location, and print out your customized maps. You can also upload/download your GPS waypoints with the addition of  the optional 'TOPO GPS USA' software.

System Requirements

Features:

Some other notes .... If you need to edit your topo maps  this is a sweet program to use. Installation gives you the option of typical, minimal or custom. Typical is for first time users with limited hard drive space. Minimal requires the least hard drive space. Custom allows better performance by storing the map files on your hard drive, which has faster retrieval time than from the CD-ROM. I installed TOPO version 1.2 first, and it was pretty straight forward process with the typical Windows installation wizard. I then moved the map files that I used the most to my hard drive to speed up performance. If you don't have a lot of hard drive space, using the map files off the CD-ROM is no problem, just slightly slower.

I then upgraded to TOPO version 2.2, which is a free upgrade from Wildflower via the Internet. Caution: version 2.0  and newer versions will not work with Windows 3.1. No problems with the 2.0 upgrade installation. You may need several CD-ROMs to cover your area, and at about $49.00 it can get expensive, but the value and tools you receive can be priceless. TrailSmart is TOPO!GPS along with National Geographic Trails Illustrated(TM) maps for 15 national parks -- maps include trail guide, safety and trip planning information. $69.95. You can get TrailSmart at the 2 retailers listed below.

Maptrails

Maptrails ..... produces interactive topographic mapping software and guides, with GPS interface on CD-ROM. Tandem View combines the detailed topography of the USGS 7.5 minute maps with the Bureau of Land Management maps showing public and private land status into a unique and powerful mapping system. Now Available, Complete USGS Map Coverage for the lower 48 States. State Explorer™ BLM Edition; seamless BLM maps for an entire state showing public/private land status and more, for only $49.99

USER REVIEWS:

I've got the State Explorer. It is definetly worth the money! - Mike

I've got the state explorer and one called Topo! The only thing the State Explorer one is good for is that it is color coded for public versus private land. Otherwise there are better programs for cruising maps. SE's resolution is really poor, especially at the higher magnification. But, it is the only program that color codes land so that makes it worth having. - BM

Maptech 3D is cool, but Maptrails Geoquad is better. You get satellite imagery, aerial photography, USGS topo, and BLM maps which will help you identify private or public. All that in one product. With the imagery you can determine vegatation type. I have Maptech, Geoquad is better IMO. It does have a "live link" with GPS so you can track yourself with a laptop & GPS too. Makes it nice if your new to an area, and trying to figure out which forest or BLM road to turn on. Geoquad is based on 7.5 minute quads, you get on 4 with the purchase and you buy additional map packs and download from the net. - grasshopper.

Whereas Maptrails seems to provide the most features in combination with the greatest detail available in topo software programming. But it is very high priced if you want to be able to map out a large area. For example, I would have several thousand dollars invested to have the same area coverage as my $50 Delorme 3.0 program provides. - Solo.

3DEM

3DEM can create three-dimensional terrain scenes and flyby animations from a wide variety of freely available data sources, including USGS digital elevation model (DEM) files, NASA Mars digital topographic map (DTM) files, as well as internally generated Mandelbrot and Julia fractals. 3DEM will render 16- or 24-bit color 3D projections, red/blue projections requiring red/blue 3D glasses for viewing, or color 3D projections requiring liquid crystal (LCD) electronic shutter glasses for viewing. Completed scenes can be saved in various formats, including JPEG, TGA, BMP, MPG, and WRL. 3DEM utilizes the SGI/Microsoft OpenGL libraries for high-speed 3D rendering. This new update features many enhancements and improvements. The shareware price is $35.

HOW TO USE 3DEM BY "DROPTINE"

Hey all,
Here is a pretty neat thing that I learned how to do yesterday, view topo quads in 3D! I thought that I would pass this on to you all because I have wished for something like this for years. Anyway, here are the steps.

1) You must do this on a computer with at least 128 Megs of ram.

2) You need to download a program called 3DEM. You can get it here:
http://download.cnet.com/downloads/0-10072-100-2169665.html?tag=st.dl.10001-103-1.lst-7-1.2169665

3) Once you install that, you need to need to know what the name of the 7.5 quad you want to view, as well as what county it is in. An easy way to find what the quad name is to go to www.topozone.com and the quad name is displayed above the map.

4) Once you have that information, go to the following site, GIS Data Depot:
http://www.gisdatadepot.com/dem/demdownload.html

5) Click on the state you want

6) On the new web page that comes up, click on the county that you want.

7) On the next webpage, click on the link that says "Digital Elevation Models (DEM) - 24K".

8) A page with a list of all of the 7.5 quads for that county should come up. Scroll down to the correct quad name and click on the green button with a triangle on it next to the name of the quad you want.

9) On the next page you should see a 2 links that say "Click here with right mouse button to download:" and then a bunch of numbers. The first link should have a ".TAR.GZ" at the end. That is the one we want. Right click on that link and then choose "Save Target As" to save it to your hard drive.

10) Once that is finished downloading, click the back button 2 times to get back to the web page that you were on at the begining of step 7.

11) Click on the link that says "Digital Raster Graphics (DRG) - 24K".

12) A list of all the quads for that county should come up. Scroll down to the correct quad and click on the green triangle button next to it.

13) On the web page that comes up, there should only be one link that says "Click here with right ..." Right click and save that link to your hard drive. This file will be between 2 or 8 megs and may take about 20 minutes or more to download if you're on a dial up modem.

14) You will need Winzip to unzip these files. If you don't have it you can get it from www.winzip.com.

15) Unzip the file that you downloaded that is a bunch of numbers and letters and ends in .zip. With Winzip installed you should just have to double click on the file to unzip it.

16) Now unzip the file that ends in TAR.GZ by double clicking on it. Winzip will ask you if you want to decompress it to a temporary folder and open it. Click Yes. Then you will be able to extract the files just like any other zip file. Extract these files to the same directory where you extracted the files from the .zip file.

17) Now go to where you installed the 3DEM program. Start the 3DEM program by clicking on 3dem.exe

18) Click on the ok button. Then click on the ok button for the box that says "Please register 3DEM at a later time"

19) Click on the menu named "File." Move the mouse over the entry on the menu that comes down named "Load Terrain Model." A side menu should come up. Click on the entry named "Digital Model."

20) On the box that comes up, make sure that the "USGS SDTS DEM" option is selected and then click on the OK button.

21) In the file box that comes up, go to the directory where you extracted all of the files to in steps 15 and 16. You should see a bunch of files with the ".ddf" Double click on any of these files.

22) The program should say something like "Loading STDS file" and then it will show a graphic with green, yellow and brown colors on it. This is the elevation data for the quad.

23) In the 3dem program click on the Operation Menu. On the menu that pops down, click on the entry named "F5 Apply Map Overlay."

24) A box titled "Apply Map Overlay" should pop up. Click on the button titled "Load."

25) This will bring up a file box. Go to the directory where you unziped the files in steps 15 and 16. There should be a file that ends in ".tif" Double click on it.

26) The computer says "Please Wait" It will crunch for a while and then a box that says "This large map must be resized for use with 3DEM. Choose OK to resize and save the map for future use..." Click on the OK button.

27) The program will show a countdown through the lines remaining and then you should see a tiny version of a topo map in the Apply Map Overlay box.

28) Click on the button named "Crop Borders."

29) A box that says "This map will be cropped for use with 3DEM. Choose OK to crop and save map for future use." Click on the OK button.

30) A file box will come up. Enter any name you want for the bitmap.

31) The next window to come up is a digital version of the quad that we all know and love. You will notice that there are red crosses with black lines connecting them in each of the corners. If you click on the red cross, it becoms green and you can move it and the black lines move as well. What you need to do is move the crosses so that only the topo part of the map is inside them. You will see that the topo is not straight up and down. This is OK. Just move the crosses at each of the corners until ALL of the topo is inside the black lines. There will be a little bitt of white but this is ok. The 3DEM program will take care of that.

32) Once you have the crosses lined up how you want them, Press the "Enter" or "Return" key on the keyboard.

33) Now you will see the topo with a black square on top of it. You can move the black square around by clicking on it and holding the mouse button down and dragging it around. Everything inside of the black square will be in the 3D view. To make the black square bigger, click on a corner of the square and hold the mouse button down and drag.

34) Once you have the area you want inside of the black square, click on the menu named "Operation." Click on the item named "F3 3D View."

35) A box entitled "Terrain Projection Parameters" will pop up. You should see the name of quad.

36) In the "Projection Size" area, check the entry that is closest to your desktop size without being bigger.

37) In the "Terrain Position" area, check the entry named "Far."

38) In the "Terrain Resolution" area, check the entry named "Max."

39) Click on the OK button.

40) After a minute, the 3D view will come up.

41) To move around and zoom in or out, click on the menu in the 3D View window named "Operation." Then click on the menu item named "F6 Change Position."

42) A box will pop up that has various options for moving the view.

43) Have Fun!

44) If you want to have even more fun then Click on the following 2 links.
http://www.planetside.co.uk/terragen/
http://www.mclusky.co.uk/firmament/
These will use the STDS DEM files that you downloaded to create photo realistic scenes.

Anyway, hope you all like this
