CheckIt NetOptimizer actually adjusts your computer's modem, port and software settings to accept data faster from the Internet. These adjustments act like a bigger, faster phone line, where data flies to your computer unrestricted by "default" settings. The process is simple. NetOptimizer's Internet Tune-Up adjusts your PC settings, downloads a test file, and benchmarks the results. After three passes, the changes that resulted in the best performance increase are set as your new standard settings. From this point on, you'll experience faster Internet performance. If you can't get a DSL or cable hookup to the Internet, and have to suffer using a regular phone line modem, this will help speed up your surfing. Also has modem troubleshooting feature and dial-up settings recovery. For the fastest surfing, get a 3Com US Robotics External V.90 modem, (approx. $130.00), and use an ISP that has V.90 servers. You should be able to get up around 46K to 48K bps connect speed if you have decent local telephone system. You can increase your download speeds from 3.0 Kbps to 4.7Kbps. Nothing worse than clicking and waiting, with a slow modem. You want an external modem because it has the drivers on the modem board, and does not slow down your microprocessor like an internal Winmodem will. Avoid Winmodems at all costs.

Junkbusters.com .... If you're tied of the spam e-mail, telemarketing, junk mail, cookies and all the other obnoxious marketing, this site is very helpful. They show you how to trace the offenders and put a stop to it.
Linuxberg .... The world's best collection of Linux software.
McAfee .... Antivirus software. They bought Cybermedia and now offer Oil Change and Uninstaller. Uninstaller is a program I use to monitor any installation of programs, and to uninstall them if I have any problems.  Windows 95/98 uninstall does not do a very thorough job of erasing all the files, especially registry entries. If you have any crashes or conflicts, Uninstaller restores your computer to to exactly how it was before the install of the problem software. Norton's Cleansweep is another uninstall program that does a good job too.
Magic Folders .... A slick program from PC Magic Software that allows you to hide files and folders on your computer. Great for you goof-offs at work that play computer games on your network.
Microsoft Support Knowledge Base Search .... This is a good place to search for help if you have problems with you Microsoft produtcs.
Norton Antivirus .... The best antivirus you can get from Symantec. Trust me, I've had 2 viruses before I had antivirus protection, and it isn't any fun. Get Norton Anitvirus and run the update weekly to stay out of trouble. They also have other software for maintaining your computer.
Norton Ghost .... If you ever crashed a hard drive, and hated reloading all your software, this is a program you need. You can make a copy, or image, of your hard drive to another drive like a CD-R or  tape backup. Then, if you do lose your hard drive, you can just copy the image back and you'll be back up running shortly without spending days reloading all your software and reconfiguring your preferences and settings. A huge huge  time saver. Did I mention how much time this program saves?
Partition Magic .... Dividing a hard drive into several partitions lets you efficiently organize operating systems, programs, and data. Made by Powerquest, they also have "Drive Image" which can make a copy, or image, of your hard drive to another drive like a CD-R or  tape backup. Then, if you do lose your hard drive, you can just copy the image back and you'll be back up running shortly without spending days reloading all your software and reconfiguring your preferences and settings.
PC Magazine Online .... ZDNet's great magazine with reviews of hardware and software, software downloads, email newsletter, and other good puter stuff. You can watch ZDTV, a computer show, on cable or channel # 273 on DirectTV satellite. Kate and Leo are a hoot. Amaze yourself!
PC World .... The computer magazine online with hardware and software reviews, a tipworld newsletter, and much more.
The Register .... Great news site to keep up with the latest rumors. Daily e-mail newsletter too.
Reseller Ratings.com .... So you want to get that new camcorder or computer and you've found the lowest price on the net. Problem is, you've never heard of the retailer. Well, now you can find out, by reading the consumer reviews of electronic retailers. Remember, lowest price isn't always the best deal, you have to consider the heartache of customer no-service with that low price. Bottom line, Caveat Emptor.

WinFiles.com .... Lots of tips and software for Windows 95.98. Great email newsletter too.
WinZip .... The great  program for reading and creating zip files. Zip files make it easy to group files and make transporting and copying these files faster by compressing them into a smaller size
Wired News .... Great news site for keeping up on the net. They offer an e-mail newsletter too.
WS_FTP LE 4.6 .... IPSWITCH's  great FTP program. FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol. FTP client software allows you to transfer files between your hard drive and a remote server. For instance, you could put your personal home page up on the Web by transferring files from your hard drive to a Web server, or you can download programs from your favorite shareware site. WS-FTP LE 4.6 is free, or you can get the pro version for a fee. I use the free version, and it works fine. Great time saver.
Zip Magic ....  I used to use Winzip like everyone else. But after using Zip Magic, there was no looking back. If you deal with zip files, you have to get this excellent program.
Zone Alarm .... This is one of the best firewalls to prevent the hacking of your computer and it's free for personal use. Be safe and install it today.

APC .... These guys make great UPS systems that can power your computer when the AC power goes off. A must have to prevent losing data.
