I was thinking a god 500+ for sure. When are you going to take him home and let us know his size? Looks like a big boy. Make sure your shot is true. Good luck.

+1. Bears typically look like this when they depend on human garbage.

He has been hanging around in the mountains behind our place and as far as we know, hasn't been in our garbage. He did take out 6 bee hives and is enjoying all the apples, wild plums, and other goodies available this time of year. If there had been a fence around the hives, he would have a depredation permit hanging over his head. As it is, there isn't a bear season in Modoc. He is significantly larger than any of the other bears we have photographed on the ranch.

I'd be nervous as hell making the shot on him!... be worried it wouldn't penetrate deep enough thru all that fat! Eeek!

You can't hunt bears in most of Modoc County. We didn't have bears in the Warner mountains until about 10 years ago. Sense then, bears have moved in and expanded in numbers very quickly. They are starting to become a problem. The F&W is trying to get a hunt here but with the current makeup of the Fish and Game Commission, it is going to be really hard to ever get a new hunt passed. So, short of him doing something that warrants a depredation permit, he is safe.

He's big. You guys are over estimate. I'd say real close to 400 pounds.

He is a health fat boy, but not to old, looks to be maybe 38" to the shoulders by the shrubs around, I would agree with Dunderee 400 lbs. Very nice coat, has the white chest patch, would make a great rug and he is not dirty mangy looking so he probably taste real good also.

A fatty for sure, but I agree that the estimates are way high. Whatever estimate is lowest, I'll go lower - under 400 lbs. for sure.

For me, there's not comparable background in the photo to guess the weight.
I will say I'm not so sure he is a he, look at the feet, the face and those potential birthing hips. Considering the date of the photo, it could be... a well fed pregnant female.
There wasn't enough room in the boat.

Reminds me of my senior prom date ... Based on that, I'll go over 500# with my guess.
