I think it is my mistake again, you are asking about Vandenberg. Never been there. Still my dream.

Yes, something is growing on the antlers and upper part of the head. He even cannot open his eyes.

Crazy. I recall seeing a deer like that on the game warden show. They dispatched the deer to get it out of pain. I think the one on the show had a tumor that had got big and taken away sight. That's no good. Need to put that bad boy out of its misery.

The deer did not look to be suffering, also i doubt anyone wants to spend his tag on such a trophy.

Pssh.... Must be nice to have such abundant populations where you go, and to get to that point in your life where you can be picky about WHICH deer you take. I hope I get to have that problem some day.

Good for him, did he happen to say anything about conditions or seeing other deer?

I'm sure Dave will post it, but he just posted the harvest report on the Gun Club FB.

5 bucks taken this weekend. Much lower than normal.

Hunted Saturday morning and evening. Saturday morning my buddy glassed up 3 bucks about 800-1000 yards out. As we were making a move to get closer our other hunting group shoots one of the bucks. Ok fork, but big body. We didn't realize they were where they were at. Thought they went the other direction! Hunted a different area in the evening and didn't see a single deer.

I called Sacramento yesterday, only about 35 G-11 tags left. If you want one, better act quickly.

Game warden shack said C1 was closed because hunters were going around a closed & locked gate. No word as to when/if the area would re-open.

This second one is a brute! I had a camera picture of him taken during archery season. The guy is a friend of a friend. He got him near the golf course. I have been in there almost every season for at least a day, you helped me about 2 years ago with a buck in there. Well he hit him with a sabot and from the sound of it it failed to expand. Went back and tagged it the next weekend.

From the sound of it they are starting to move. I will be up next Saturday. I may even leave Friday to set camp up and zero my rifles Saturday morning as the wind in the desert is up.

That forky is a big bodied deer! As for the second deer, I've been following that saga since the beginning of archery season. Damn shame, that. I was kinda hoping that deer would have lasted longer. But word is 5-6 folks were after that guy. Anyway, I can't make it up till 16 Sept, my daughter's ready to pop any day now and we're on alert 5. Keep the intel coming!

I wonder what gate they're talking about? I can only think of two, and neither has ever been locked.

Ya I couldnt make it for archery season. I was pretty bummed. It should be pretty good around mid Sept if last season was any indication. If I had more patients I would wait too. I will post what I see while I am up there.

Will do, you probably don't remember, but I've ran into up there before. My wife shot a fork opening morning of 2014 and you were at the check station, there was also 2 guys with 2 smaller bucks. You also gave me some advice on caping my buck in 2012.

Anyway my son and I will be in a dark gray Tacoma with a shell. Probably staying at the fan camp as well.

One of the joys of getting older, the gift of forgetfulness. That's probably why retired guys are so happy. They have no memory!😁

How about they do some police work and catch the violators instead of mass punishment???

Hey all. Season started slow for us but better for others with some nice ones coming in opening weekend. Shame about the 4x by the golf course but the fella still put his tag on it regardless! Just getting over a full moon so hopefully more movement in the am and pm than we have seen. Lots more fog this year and over all cooler than last year. I've only shot once so far and that was on a coyote (may he rest in peace). Saw real big lion prints on road 1 and above the river bottom so they haven't left for greener pastures yet. We lost three days to radiator and water pump going out while in Z1.

The z zone area designations are nice because you can work with more options without returning to the check station. Officer Moses did remind every one that you still need to respect the area designations ( while in Z1 area B4 it is still shotgun only-or muzzleloader- and you can get your rifle out only when you get to C1 as an example). If you enter an archery area same thing, just secure your guns as per regs and have your archery equipment out.

I think C1 is still closed at this time due to knuckleheads driving around gates and making their own roads. I'm with the "thewood" on going after the violaters but its tough when so many are being bone heads. Honest mistakes not withstanding, we have seen and heard of numerous violations so far this season. We hope everyone is given the benefit of the doubt but so far we have seen lots of people without orange (back to hat and vest again unless archery hunting), hunters in a3 (archery area not open till after plover season with at least one deer harvested in there last week) and hunters with their gun barrel pointed out the window....Yup. Saw it. We are better than that. Remember the wardens have 27 miles of coastline and 98 thousand acres to patrol so can't be every where at once. Big fire danger this year (smoke and ash on base every day this week mixed with fog from a huge fire in the Los Padres behind Santa Barbara and fires up north) so don't get caught on grassy roads. Officer Moses said zero tolerance for that this year. We can easily make mistakes but this is ridiculous. If you see something, call the wardens. Be safe and don't be dumb. It could cost us an area or a season or heaven forbid someone gets hurt!

Passed on some forkies so far with the small forks and spikes starting to head butt and wrestle so good sign for pre-rut we hope. We watched seven deer the other night play king of the mountain on a sand dune with the does kicking at each other with their front hooves and the spikes chasing them. One of the spikes has a drop tine on one side with a round ball of horn on the end down by his chin and jaw line. Great fun to watch. Worried that harvest of 106 bucks last season and 46 does is showing by what we have not seen this season. Lots of feed this year but the water holes are drying up after the huge fail of an El Nino this year. Our friends took two bucks opening week and both were full of belly fat and in good condition. Wish there was no extra week of g-11 season because the deer that survive six weeks of zone a and g-11 in September need a break and a chance to recover. Just saying...

And if you like quail hunting, Vandenberg is loaded. We have never seen anything like it. And rabbits are every where this year. Might need them should this season be less then amazing on the deer front like last year. Have fun and good luck.

Thanks Monica. sounds like some shooters still out there, but few and far between.

What gates in C-1 are locked now? Been racking my brain and the only gate I know that CAN be locked is up on top of
    Globe.

Badgers Huntress, thanks for the detailed report. I didn't hunt VAFB last year but saw all the reports and figured the amount of good bucks taken, on top of everything else, would effect this season.

Sad to hear about the violations. Honest mistakes are one thing but guns out the window and driving around locked gates!? Not sure what goes through some peoples heads but things like that make it too easy for base hunting programs to be closed down.
