This mid level GPS was introduced in the 4rth quarter or 2001. The features the Meridian Gold have that the plain Meridian doesn't are the 16 megs of onboard basemap instead of 2 megs. This GPS unit also floats. This unit has a WAAS capable receiver which allows for better accuracy.

Other reviews of the Magellan Merdian Gold .... My personal opinion of this unit is pretty high. I would give it about an 8.5-9 out of 10. It still has some bugs to be worked out but overall gets a lock much faster than my Garmin 12Map and has address lookup. The screen is a bit bigger than my Garmin but still with the same resolution. The unit itself could be a little smaller but it's not bad. The ability to use SD memory cards is a definite plus and probably it's biggest selling point. This, and the address lookup, caused me to part with my Garmin and I feel it's a step-up from that unit. - Doug
