The Garmin GPS V was released in the October of 2001. The big changes from the III+ are increased user map memory of19 megabytes over 1.4 megabytes, auto-routing, which provides access to the shortest and fastest routes, turn-by-turn directions and estimated time of arrival at your intended destination. The new ENHANCED MapSource CitySelect CD provides you with auto-routing capability (but no voice directions). The higher resolution of the screen display is a nice upgrade, going to 160 x 256 vs 100 x 160 pixels. All III+ accessories work with the GPS V. There is also a perpetual calendar, fish/hunt best time display, gas mileage calculator feature and a game when you get bored. The Garmin GPS V is the least expensive auto address to address GPS receiver available. The ability to orientate the screen horizontally for your car dash and then change it to vertical when hiking is slick.
