Pros:
Cons:

Two co-workers of mine went hunting there. Its not really hunting in the classic sense of the word its more like shooting critter in an enclosure . I met some one who hunted there with a handgun and said it was more challenging. Canned hunting isn't necessarily good or bad it just depends what you like its not for everybody.

Pros: Great experience for a beginner/families
Cons: Not for those looking for a huge challenge

Bottom Line: Look, everyone at the ranch had a great time, shot something, and went away with a smile on their face. While it may not be the place for you, it is a great place to spend a weekend introducing someone to hunting.

I took my wife hunting for the first time on Big Horn Ranch last year. It was her first time actually hunting and after weeks of prep work sighting in and getting comfortable with a rifle, we were looking to put some meat in the freezer. First let me tell you whats great about this place. First, the owners are really nice and easy to deal with. Second, they let you camp on the ranch or you can stay in the bunk house (basically a big shed) for free. We camped with our inlaws and our children and they were totally cool with that. Third, the view up there is almost woth the price of admission itself. They have clay launchers right on the cliff and you can shoot up there with pretty much the whole world at your feet (or at least Moreno Valley). Fourth, they will transport you around on an ATV and if you are not having luck, they will give you a ride. Fifth, they will help you recover your kill and will even clean and pack it for a small fee (very reasonable). Sixth, After the hunt you can store your meat in a locker and they invited us to stay the rest of the weekend up there camping for free if we wanted to. Seventh, there is an abundance of game to shoot at. Eigth, the terrain is fairly challenging, so even though it is basically a fenced hunt, you still have somewhat of a challenge.

Now for the bad. Yes, this is a RANCH. This in no way resembles a wilderness hunting adventure. Basically the place has a fence around it and you are pretty much sure to shoot something.

Me personally, I only hunt fair chase. But for a kid or someone trying hunting out for the first time, this place is great. I saw a couple of kids there who took there first pig and they were ecstatic. My wife saw a bunch of animals (including pigs, goats, exotics and a big ol' rattle snake) and her adrenaline was pumping all day long. When we had our stalk and she took her shot the smile on her face was priceless. Had we spent the weekend trampling around Ft. Hunter Ligget or some place and come up empty, I am not so sure she would be spending her evenings practicing her turkey calls and preparing for our next hunting adventure.

The best guarantee that your wife or kids will understand your love of hunting and want to spend time with you doing it is for them to love it too. This is a great place for that "first date."

Pros:
Cons:

I've hunted the ranch a couple of times bowhunting. I will tell you that this hunt is what you make it. If you want to find an animal that is spooky and will offer you a challenge, remember I am bowhunting, it is available. Both times I've been there I have come across hogs that winded me and ran clear across the ranch. This is a great place if you want to take a young hunter and let them see animals and get a good shot. Each time I've gone I had a great time. Can't complain about having the ability to look and see if any spooky animals are available in february when all the seasons are closed.
