Description: On the Work Ranch, we have a cross of Feral and Russian wild boar that have fully reverted to the wild. The Russian boars were imported for the San Carlos Ranch in Monterey County by George G. Moore in 1926.

Over the years they have interbred into what we have today, but have retained both the looks and disposition of their European cousins. These pigs are lean and muscular and can obtain speeds up to 30 m.p.h. They have great agility and can maneuver through brush and open terrain with great ease. An average pig weighs in between 150 and 180 pounds. An adult boar stands about 30 inches tall and weighs between 200 and 300 pounds. They are covered with a thick armor plating around the shoulders and develop tusks sometimes in the excess of three inches in length.

The wild pig is a formidable foe; fierce, intelligent and always dangerous at bay. You are required to use a rifle of not less than .25 caliber (.270, 30-06, or 7mm mag are preferred). Rifles should be sighted in at 200 yards. If you wish to hunt with a handgun, we prefer you use the 41 44 mag caliber. Handguns should be sighted in at 50 yards.

We use a 4x4 vehicle to get around on the ranch. We also hike to spot and stalk game. No dogs are used. A Guide will be provided for every group of 3-4 hunters. Your Guide will recover your game, skin, clean and split your pig so that it is ready for processing. Your pig will then be stored in our walk-in cold box until you are ready to leave. Bring along a 120 quart ice chest chilled down with ice to transport your game.

Normally our pig hunts are for 2 days; 2 mornings and 2 evenings. If you get your pig early on in these 2 days, you are welcome to stay and do some varmit hunting. All hunters are required to have a valid hunting license and tags. Pig tags are nontransferable and that means you cannot share or sell the tags to another hunter. All state and local laws will be followed and safety is stressed at all times.

Pros: Great Ranch, good food, lots of pigs
Cons:

I have hunted with Bert on the Work Ranch several times. Bert runs a top notch hunt: nice cabin to stay in, great meals, and a beautiful ranch. Bert will put you on the pigs and when you kill there is a great place the clean and chill the meat in a walk-in cooler.

Highly recommended.

Bert is no longer guiding on the Work or Jack Ranches. Frank Hook is guiding on the Jack Ranch nearby. You can reach him at http://www.jackranchwildpighunts.com/
