Pros: All-new material, data-rich, excellent photos and maps
Cons: None

I received the David Long book, Public Land Mulies, from the JHO store today...

First impression: the single chapter on backpacking hunting blows away Cameron Haines's whole book new book on Backcountry Bowhunting... Not that Cams book was bad, if you aren't familiar with Cameron's writings from Eastmans Bowhunting Journal or his other, older books, it's a great resource, and definately inspiring as Cameron is legitimately HARDCORE... but, I will say I was a bit disappointed with Cameron's latest as I had read over half of it already and it was overhyped as being all-new.

Conversely, David Long's book is simply much more detailed and original, with a lot more relevant tips and tricks... some of the backpacking tips are even new to me. What I like most is that for every piece of gear, David honestly says there are pros and cons, what he likes best, worst, and why... for example, his section on packs, and on stoves, and on everything... is brutally honest in that there is no "perfect" pack, or "perfect" stove, etc... every piece of gear is a compromise of sorts. Depending on what type of backpacking trip you are going on, if you have a partner, etc... and most off all, how much expereince you have, should influence what choice of pack or stove or meals or whatever may be the best compromise for a particular trip. He really breaks it down.

I've only so far skimmed the rest of the book, but it's laid out the same way... lots of real experiences, learning from mistakes, excellent stories, really, really up-to-date and EXCELLENT real data on deer habits such as migration, as well as herd strengths, judging etc... Imagine taking Mike Eastmans "Hunting High Country Mule Deer", and Cameron Haines "Bowhunting Trophy Blacktails", and Dwight Schuh's "Hunting Open Country Mule Deer", and Cameron's new book book "Backcountry Bowhunting", then updating and condensing everything into a well organized, highly detailed tome called "Public Land Mulies", and that appears to be what David Long has come up with.

It also comes with a DVD but I'm too bushed to get into that tonight... Two thumbs up on the book!
