One of the most often overlooked aspects of hunting apparel and safety is quality footwear. A pair of rugged, dependable, comfortable boots can make the difference between a good day in the field and an agonizing walk through hell. The message here is when it comes to what you put on your feet, don't skimp or you'll limp.
As a dedicated, long time blacktail hunter, my default methods of bagging this elusive deer are "spot and stalk" and "still" hunting. Consequently, I put a lot of hard miles on my feet every season over rugged, steep terrain.
Let's take a look at a pair of high-quality hunting boots from one of the top names in footwear--Danner. I recently purchased a pair of Danner Jackal GTX 8" hunting boots and I've not been disappointed. The Jackal is Danner's first "stalking" hunting boot. This boot is ideal for hunters wanting to be stealthy, quiet, and oh-so comfortable in the woods.
Danner describes the Jackal as a "Mocassin" style platform providing a better "ground feel" through the boot than traditional boots. Danner accomplishes this by combining a thin midsole and outsole with a thick, cushioning insole. The result is a comfortable, padded walking surface that feels a lot like your favorite pair of sneakers yet retains the support and protection of a well-constructed boot. The thinner soles allow the wearer to better feel sticks and twigs underfoot and avoid breaking them thus alerting game. The Jackal also sports a waterproof GORE-TEX liner with soft full-grain pigskin leather and Mossy Oak Obession camo. They also happen to be a mighty nice-looking pair of hill-stompin' boots...for all you more fashion conscious killers out there.
I discovered on my first hunt wearing my new Jackals that they are good to go right out of the box with no break-in whatsover required. I also discovered the hard way, while crossing a river on my quad, that they keep your feet warm, but not hot, even filled with cold water. My quad very nearly swam with the fishes but I continued the hunt after a daring rescue.
That hunt took me from terrain as varied as the rocky, sandy (and wet!) river bottom to a steep, rugged, brush and fallen timber choked clear-cut. I found the Jackals remained comfortable and supportive while maintaining solid traction on every surface thrown at them. They are also the quietest boots I've worn...great for still hunting (bow hunters take note!). As for their quality, Danner has a reputation for high-quality footwear. The Jackal's appear to be very well-constructed but only a season or two of hard hunting will tell.
The Jackal JTX retails for about $135.00 USD. As for all you boot-geeks out there, here's the specs:
