My
Dad with a Missouri gobbler
This is my Dad with a gobbler that he said he wasn't even sure
if it was his. He thought it could be one of his hunting buddies who were
with him that trip. Dad sure can call in the turkeys. My first trip turkey
hunting with him when I was 6 years old, he called in a gobbler. The gobbler
came in so fast that Dad had to throw down the old box call which spooked
the tom and he never got a shot. We laugh about it now, but we really were
rookies that day.
1998
California Dove Opener
This is my friend Andy (aka Opie), and his pretty daughter Megan
on our first Dove hunt in the 1998 season. We can't forget the dog "Blackie"
either, who helped find all the birds with Megan. The location is just west
of Palm Springs in the Southern Californian desert. As you can see, Megan
had mom sew her a camo outfit just like Dad. Clear beautiful skies full of
doves, what more could you ask for. Andy also likes to hunt elk and mule deer
in Utah, Arizona and Montana. He's got some real wall hangers at his house.
1997 California Muley Fork
This is my 1997 Forkie Muley Deer from the D-14 zone in Southern California.
The buck weighed an estimated 170 lbs. and was 2 years old. It was early morning
and he came over the ridge trailing 6 does. The does winded another hunter,
and luckily for me, changed direction, bringing the buck to about 130 yards
away. Rifle used was a Winchester Model 70 Sporter in .300 win mag. Ammo used
was Federal Premium Nosler Partition 180 grain. The shot was a right side quartering
toward me. The buck dropped on the shot and was recovered without any trailing.
Bullet entered on the right shoulder destroying shoulder and exited out left
rib cage with 1 inch exit hole.
Bob's 1997 6 pt. Missouri Buck
This is my hunting buddy Bob, (aka "Gutshot"), who I grew up with in Missouri.
This is his Whitetail buck taken in 1997 near Rothville Mo. Bob's rifle is the
venerable Marlin .30-30 lever action with Bushnell Scope. We won't discuss where
this bullet was placed. Suffice it to say I stood upwind while Bob field dressed
this one.
Missouri Coyote
This was probably the easiest coyote I've ever called in. I was squirrel hunting
near Plato Missouri and sneaking up on a barking gray squirrel. Out of the corner
of my eye I see this coyote ambling by. I gave her a quick squeak with my mouth
since I didn't have time to pull out the mouth calls. She froze at about 30
yards, trying to figure out where the sound came from. I didn't think the Remington
Heavy Field Loads of #6 would be enough from my Remington 870 pump shotgun,
but one shot was all it took.
My Dad's New Magnum Rifle
Here is my Dad checking out the sights on his new magnum deer rifle somewhere
in Northern Missouri. Dad still prefers the 'open sights' as you can tell. Check
out the tough sleeping arrangements in the background. After many years of freezing
in tents and vehicles, Dad got soft and acquired a trailer. Guess who was first
in line to sleep in it?
What the Woman Wear In Missouri
This is my Uncle Larry (aka "Uncle Click"), modeling a hat that is fashionable
in the fall with the women of Missouri. Seems the women wear these hats to get
their husbands to pay some attention to them during the deer hunting season.
Sure does work good! Uncle Larry got his infamous nickname from his habit of
forgetting to load his rifle and having big bucks run up to him. More than one
of us has heard the notorious "CLICK" and the volley of salty language
that followed when Uncle Larry dropped the firing pin on an empty chamber.
My 1996 8 pt. Missouri Buck
This is a 8 point Whitetail I harvested in 1996 in Northern Missouri. I was
easing back to watch a trail after having lunch with my Dad. I had blown a setup
earlier in the morning, so I was still muttering to myself. I looked up and
there were several deer jumping around across the river from me. As I watched,
it became apparent that a buck was pushing several does. After waiting for a
clear shot, the buck finally stepped into an opening. I had to wait even more
as the buck was right underneath another hunters empty stand, and I didn't want
to blow off one of the supports with a bad shot. At 125 yards the bullet entered
on a left broadside shot just behind the shoulder, exiting on the right ribcage
with a 1 inch exit hole. The buck ran off with the does but was found 25 yards
away. Rifle used was a Winchester Model 70 Sporter in .300 win mag. Ammo used
was Federal Premium Nosler Partition 180 grain.
Dereck's First California Coyote
This is Dereck and a coyote we took in the San Bernardino Forest of Southern
California while scouting for turkeys. We had just found some fresh turkey tracks
in some leftover snow, but it was getting dark, so we turned to head back down
the trail to the truck. About that time, some coyotes started howling just over
the hill. We set up a hasty ambush, and after a couple of squeals on my rabbit
squealer, here came 2 juvenile coyotes straight in and fast. When we fired,
I saw something black flutter in the background. After checking the coyote,
we looked over the little rise we were on and there in the thicket was 35 turkeys.
Our over spray from the shotguns must have peppered them and caused them too
scare up in the air. Since it was Dereck's first time seeing turkeys in the
woods, we watched with our binocs as they headed down the hill to roost.
Sneaky Arizona Kit Fox
The fur is being worn by a Sgt. Jeff (The Body) Goodwin (USAF retired to Kentucky
hog farming), and was taken near Yuma Arizona somewhere around summer of 1982.
Our military unit was doing some desert training, and while on camp security
one night, I heard a rustling in one of our supply tents. Expecting banditos,
I flung the tent flap back, only to hear something scurry out the back side.
Rounding the tent I see this Kit Fox trotting off with my dinner. Since the
fox didn't know the answer to the password challenge, he had the air summarily
let out of him at 50 yards with a .223 from a GAU-5 rifle. The shot took him
under the chin and the fur turned out right nice, even though my point of aim,
(lead) was a little too far forward. Made a mess out of my dinner though.

This buck is the new Missouri record and ranks second to the #1 Nebraska deer taken in 1962 by Del Austin. The Austin deer scored 279 7/8 inches. Randy's deer was officially measured 12-06-2000. It scored 269 7/8 B&C Non-Typical. 33 points total, basic 5x5. Inside spread was 20 3/8. 91 2/8 inches of abnormal. Net tpyical score was 178 5/8. Gross typical score was 184 7/8. Main beams was R - 26 7/8, L - 27 2/8. A trememdous set of antlers. It is the biggest Non-typical entry by hunter in the Missouri Show-Me Big Bucks Club. He is a new state record by bow. Also the second largest non-typical in the Missouri Show-Me Big Bucks Club. If these measurement stand at Salt Lake City Utah this coming spring, by the Pope & Young Club, he could be the second largest Non-Typical Whitetail Deer taken by Bow.
