Nada here but I did find big toms on BLM and 2 wildlife areas today. I might hunt my private property spot on the opener before the birds move off of it.

tnctb,

Never fear. The turkey drawings that are mentioned are for relatively small areas. Most of the public land here is just as open as your Florida lands, but some of the isolated areas (usually associated with government installations or adjacent to parks) require a lottery drawing. I think you have some similar arrangements in Florida, if I remember correctly.

The only real lotteries we have to deal with here are for the prime deer habitat, elk (very scarce), and antelope. Other than that, we can hunt pretty much where and how we like. Shoot, the A and B-zones, which are over-the-counter tags, constitute an area almost as big as your whole state.

There are a lot of things wrong with California, but public access to good hunting isn't one of them.

I did not get drawn for anything! The reason we have drawings for everthing, and cant get drawn is that we have to many people. Everyone is compeating for limited animals. I have a friend that went down to rancho to get the reuls and they told him that they had over 6000+ applicants for those limmited opinings. If you put that many people out there unrestictd it would be extreamly unsafe. As for big game tags thats a whole other problem with the fish and game, and with this new budget problem hunters are really gone suffer if the dont manage the heards right the nexts few years.

i think we do have 1 place that you have to get drawn for turkey but im not sure. we have wma's and recreational areas.wma's require an over the counter stamp and you can use any of the wma's.the problem is that EVERYONE who doesnt own land hunts them.recreational areas are private land( mostly paper companies) who charge the state or threaten to lease the land to private clubs.i hunt on one of these and they charge us 200 dollars for the season.keep in mind we can shoot unlimited bucks and hogs during our season. recreational permits are limited to the first 300 or so people to sent there money in.most of them are pretty good places to hunt with alot of game, and the permit allows acess to all wma's

We have a drawing in Nevada also. It's for 1 or 2 wildlife areas, all other public lands and even private land (That's right...you own the land, NOT the birds). The reason is because of limited prime habitat and number of birds. We here are waiting for the turkey population to grow to more huntable numbers before any expansion outside that I previously outlined could possibly take place. SO I GO over the Sierra-Nevada Summit TO CA to hunt, where as several other guys have outlined, there are plenty of public opportunities. An out of state license costs me about 120 bucks BUT when I wake up in NV each morning I see my DISTANT neighbors American flag flying and know I am not surrounded by LEFTIST, TREE-HUGGING, AMERICA hating scum. OOPS! I love the State of California (The actual land), I WAS a native, but SOME of the people, politics, taxes and anti-real man policies were just too much.

Nevadan by choice.
