yeah go for it the shooting is good where the water levels are low, the coachella is low on sundays as a rule but its not set in stone. I was just getting into a nice school of carp in the E main last sunday when carpdog decided to use her carping skills on some hippies dog that got to close to us. I got my hand pretty messed up trying to keep Carpdog from taking this dog out. I dont know if I'll be well enough to go out there this weekend.

Oh, almost forgot, I made A big heavy SS arrow and put a 2213 sleeve over it and damm!!! I was nailing fish that my carbon mag couldnt even reach, when this thing hits the water its like it speeds up, the carp are like WTF!!. the downside is they bend easy and the tips get blunted if you miss.

You need to suck it up, duct tape and super glue that paw of yours up and come on down. March or die as they say.

It wasnt cool at all, carpdog was way out of line and now my shooting finger has no feeling from the tip to half way down the finger. now I have a matching set of numb index fingers from when I ran a hacksaw through some tendons in the other one a few years ago.

Went Saturday. A bit warm at 82 degrees and them canals are tough to shoot standing on a 45 degree sliding incline. That and the water truck guy slimmed the road just as I pulled up. I shot just east of slab city in the old canal. The new canal is almost done.

Plenty of groups of carp, I just couldn't hit any since they were on the other side of the canal. Man that's a long shot and I need a heavier arrow, the fiberglass ones I had just plane high right. How heavy is that SS arrow you made carpholeo? Would one of them Muzzy blue job arrows help?

Talked to Adolpho at Wister and he and Ray said there was good carp shooting at Finey and Ramer lakes where the water dumps in. You can launch a boat there but it's troll motors only or paddle. Gonna have to check that out.

Ray said he saw a grassie that would go 70 pounds recently. Too bad we can't shoot grassies.

when the water is up like that its damm hard to hit anything, and that current is way stronger than it looks. If the water is up I just go smallie fishing or hit some of the laterals off of the e-main that have carp up to 10 or 15 lbs. and no, a muzzy predator is not enough, nether is that cute little recurve you shoot, you need at least 60lbs for those deep shots and a SS arrow.

the SS arrow I made is 13.5 oz, nearly a pound!, when that thing hits the water it dont slow down untill it hits something, but that leads to dull tips and bent arrows quite often.
I was hoping the sleeve would help the arrow to spring back into place but that hasnt been the case. Also, my worn out retriever cant handle reeling the heavy SS arrow in.

70lb grasscarp huh, Ive seen some monsters in the coachella, but never have i seen a carp in F/R over 10 lbs, maybe he saw a beaver

Hey, I had the 55lb cute Coyote bow this trip. That current did make a few go high and wide.

I looked in some of the laterals but didn't see anything.

The water was down about 2 feet on the Highline. Enough to see the bottom.

Where is slab city and how would you differentiate a grasscarp(protected???) from a shootable carp???? Now this bowfishing thing is interesting. Thanks. 'Nuff said.

larrysogla, Slab city is just east of Niland Ca. down on the SE end of the Salton Sea. Go into Niland and take the main road east out of town and you'll hit Slab City in about 4 miles. Wind thru there and you'll see the canals.

Grass carp

COMMON NAMES: Grass carp, White amur

SCIENTIFIC NAME: Ctenopharyngodon idella

Grass carp differ from the common carp with the lack of a sucker-like mouth, and the absence of barbels on the mouth. Grass carp are usually silvery-white, rather than the brownish-yellow of the common carp. Grass carp's eyes are set lower than other carp and its mouth is noticeably smaller.

They have signs posted at the coachella that show the differences between the grass and common carp. Sometimes the big commons are schooling with the big grassies, if you accidently shoot a grass carp remove your arrow and plug up the hole with chewing gum and then gently release the fish back into the water.

I know your are only joking cuz you would never do something like that . But man thats funny!!

I have got to try this canal carp shooting.

I did that very thing about 20 years ago. I shot the wrong type of carp so I removed my arrow and plugged up the wound channel with a fresh wad of bubble gum that I was chewing. I hit it pretty far back and must have punctured the intestine. Anyway, I put the carp back in the canal but every time it farted---which they do a lot, you know---it would blow a bubble out from the wound. Over the next several minutes the bubble got bigger and bigger and soon the carp lifted up off the water and started to drift away with the wind. It went up to about 200 feet and headed for Mexicali. It dribbled little drops of water here and there along its route of travel so I turned my Brittany loose and we followed its trail as best we could. We got all the way to the foot of Mount Signal but darkness set in so we had to call it quits.

hey spectr17, if you want to shoot all the carp you can handle, take the 111 past niland and turn left on Albright rd go all the way to the E-main and in the first few section of that lateral you'll find A unbelievable amount of carp up from 1 to 10 lbs. I plucked a bunch of them from there over the weekend and gave them to the migrant workers
