I voted 270 but I have only been using it for three years in a Model Remington. Since I was 20 over 40 years ago Ive used a Remington 30-06 or a Winchester 30-30 depending on the areas I am hunting, I also love my Savage 308 that one knocks them down good I have used a 243 but I have lost a few deer with it so no 243 for me so 270, 30-06, and 308 are my favorites in that order. I like to use a 223 and 222 for hogs up close I guess all of these guns are great. Some of the calibers mentioned here have my respect the 6mm, 7mm, 260, 264, 257 Roberts and 280 I wish I owned on of each. I consider 7mm Mag and 300 Mags a little over kill for White Tail but that's only my opinion.

Hunted the hardwood bottoms of Arkansas for many years using a Marlin 336SC 30/30. It served me well, not surprising since most shots were inside of 70yds and many inside of 30yds. Changed to a Remington 700 .243 after moving to a more open hunting environment. Happy with both.

I always go out opening morning with my Rem Mod700 in 270. Mostly due to the stand I hunt. I can shoot upwards of 175 yards from that stand.
However the rest of the weekend, I take my 45/70. I love putting a big hole completely through deer. Puts 'em down quick!

Well, I'm definitely in the minority, as most of my hunting, deer included, is with either my .338 or .264 win mags, though I did shoot my blacktail this year with my son's .270. I need to try my .243 next year, haven't shot it in a very long time.

If I had to pick just one rifle for deer hunting, it'd probably be my .264, I love that rifle!

22-250 is way under rated for deer hunting, i use a remington 700 sps and have taken deer at 400 plus yards with no problem at all using hornady moly vmax 55 grain with a winchester casing. hits em hard harder then people think

    30-06.Yumy yum yum.
150 grain blunt nose for Fallow.
180 grain core locks for Sambar and bigger.

The 30-06.Who can deny the power of a French anti aircraft round (gevelot) Or Lake city machinegun ammo (heavily factory overloaded) with a bull nosed hornandy or nozler belting from the muzzle of an Eddystone M17 with extra long springfield sniper barrell made in 1918 and stamped.WHIIIIZZZZZZZ PLOP they go.I can't find anything that compares.Nothing made after 1950 compares.Millitary factory overloaded ammo with sporting heads rock.

30-06 because that is what I have used for the most part over the years and it has worked very effectively, but my second would be a 6.5 Swede, then .270 Win., then 30-30 (within it's effective range).

it always ends up being a close race between .270 and the 30.06..

i have an 06, but my favorite caliber for deer is my .257 weatherby..i love it. 120 gr partition..deadly.

my favorite round when younger was a 243 rem but for the last 10 years it has been a remingtom 700 308 win. now this year i'll have a straw drawing contest to see what goes in the woods with me. the 308 win rem.700........the 30-06 t/c encore or the 15" barreled 308 win t/c handgun ..whoooooo weeeeee what decisions lol

Hi all, I've had great succes with Ruger m77 in .243, various model 70s in 7mm rem and .270. However, my little sweetheart has been my weatherby mark5 deluxe japan made .257! She really gets out there like a laser!

Deer do not have a favorite caliber.

We can't use rifles here in oh. so my 12 gauge with Rem copper solids is my go to gun here. If i'm going out of stste then my 30-06 well be in my hands and the 7mm08 will be my backup gun. One works as well as the other but I shoot the 06 better.

I'm suprised you left out 30-30, 35 Remington, and 300 Savage - all 3 still popular hunting cartridges in Pennsylvania.

When I bought my first deer rifle about 7 years ago I asked everyone I knew that hunted what caliber I should get most everyone told me I couldn't go wrong with a 270, I had never hunted before. When I went shopping for one the guy at the gun store didn't have one and sold me on a 7mm wsm BAR he said it would take down any north American big game animal . I wanted an auto loader so I bought it. Seven deer later and I understand what he was talking about they were all one shot one kill and they never went more than 40 yards most dropped on the spot. The only problems are is that the ammo is pricy and you can't get it at Walmart.

I'm not a seasoned hunter by any means but I've taken some decent Saskatchewan whitetails and mulies with a 30-06. I'm thinking of buying a 7mm-08 "for my son" that I'll of course have to try out as well just to make sure it will be good for him

the 7mm08 is a fine round. my wife is 102 pounds and recoil shy but has done very well with her 7mm08. we cant hunt deer with a rifle here in Ohio . but she has taken black bear. hog, kudu . wilderbeest. impala. blesbuck. mountain reedbuck . and more with it. If your son is small the youth mod 7 Rem is a fine rifle.

im partial to my .25-06 ackley. its probably my ugliest rifle with matte blueing and plain black synthetic stock, but, its light, hits amazingly hard, and unbelievably accurate. i have taken deer with a 7 wsm, 30-30, 30.06, 22-250, and .270. all performed well, just partial to my ackley
