Time to upgrade here...but I want get a kit set and supply my own drives..capture card..burner..ect.

I want to know what the difference between amd or pent. processors. Which do you like? Why?

Do the mother boards go " out of date" like a sales guy was telling me...if so can you recomend what to look out for...there all just a bunch a numbers to me and I don't trust sales people. ###Is it tricky to assemble a pc or does window recognise technical probs.
I'm looking at 1g- 1.5g athlon ..512ram range to do videos and photos the odd game too....All info need I'm a beginer at these things...Thanx yoteee'

    My 2 cents worth.

I am "in the business" so to speak, I do
telephone computer tec support for the company I work for. I have build computers for myself, my daughters and several for friends, so I have some background here. ### ###

1.Define your purpose, which you did in your post, it's ###like building a car, make sure it suits your needs. If you ### don't need a sports car why pay the huge difference in ### price for something you never use. ###

    2. Don't try to keep up with technology, stay a step or two
behind the latest and greatest. It is much cheaper. The ### price difference between a 1.4 Mhz AMD and AMD XP 2000 chip ###is about $200 but you don't have $200 worth of difference ### in performance. Same goes for video and CD burners. Would ### you pay $100 difference to be able to ocasionally burn a cd ###at 40 speed in 3.5 min rather than 16 speed in 6 or 8 min?

    3. COMPATIBILITY COMPATIBILITY COMPATIBILITY, some places ### charge 15% - 20% re-stocking fee if you send a component ### back. Try a motherboard combo kit, if you don't know how ### ### to match components. It matches the board to processor and ### usually throws in a heat sinc and fan. Read the fine print ### you usually find compatibility issues there like memory ### requirements. So if you are going to use an AMD processor ### & board it makes sense to use DDR RAm which was developed ### for that chip and furthermore use a ddr based video card ### too. ### ### ###
    ### ###

###In conclusion, HEAT is a processor killer, be sure to buy ### the proper cooling fan and BE SURE to buy the proper case, ### case fans and power supply. It takes 2 seconds from the ### ###time you hit the power switch to fry an AMD chip @ 202F.

###A good wholesaler is http://www.tcwo.com and they don't try to ### ### kill you on shipping. ###
    ###
###The best case I've found with AMD approved power supply is

    Good Luck. LW

    Hi Coyote,
Building a system can be hard or easy depending on what you need to do with it. ###My company is a networking dealer and I would be glad to help you through the project.

Based on your posts here are some insights.

    1. Whether P4 1.x gig or Athalon you will not be able to tell much difference. ###AMD is a lower cost option and it is mostly preference.

    2. Visit http://www.tccomputers.com if you want to build it yourself. Why? ###If you buy the Motherboard and Processor from them they will install it for you and save you some config time and maybe stop you from frying something.

    3. Gigabyte mainboards are decent boards as well as Abit and Asus.

    4. Don't buy cheap CPU fan as stated. ###You will end up replacing it within 24 months. ###Buy a ball bearing based one.

    5. Video card you chose looks good GeForce 2mx chipset good video performance. ###Visit http://www.nvidia.com for details on the chipsets and why you would pick one over the other.

    6. Make sure you purchase a 7200 rpm hard drive. ###We prefer Western Digital since we have had problems with Maxtors.

    7. You mentioned video editing and thats changes the specs on a system quite a bit if you're serious about it. ###First video editing eats up drive space fast. ###A 100 + gig system would not be out of the norm. ###As stated in previous post a RAID system is recommended for video editing. ###Also make sure if you go the IDE hard drive route you purchase an ATA100 drive. ###This is the speed at which your Motherboard and hard drive transfer data. ###Make sure the motherboard you choose is ATA100 as well.
Firewire card a must but look at a bundled card and editing software such as the products at Pinnacle http://www.pinnaclesys.com they have a great setups. See what best meets your needs and take a look at their minimum hardware requirements.

    8. RAM 256MB min 512Mb Nice. ###Motherboard you choose dictates which type Sdram cheapest most common or Rdram more expensive not as popular and DDR.

    9. I like turtle beach pci sound cards and a 5 speaker setup on speaker system. ###For games it makes a difference.

    10. CD-Writer - I would buy both a CDROM (read only) and a DVD Writer. ###DVD holds alot more data and is affordable now.

    11. Modem or Network Card for Internet connectivity. ###Modem 56K PCI internal if dialup. I prefer 3com 3c905 PCI cards for network. ### Some ISP's provide network cards with there services.

    12. Monitors - ###If not considering video editing 17" is fine. ###19"-21" recommended if video editing might even want a second video card and monitor if desired. ###Note monitors clarity are determined by their max resolution, refresh rate, and dot pitch. The higher the resolution, refresh rate the better. With dot pitch the lower the better .24mm is better than .26mm.

    13. Operating System? ###Windows 98se, Windows 2000 Pro, Windows ME, XP Home edition what to choose???
First revisit what you are going to do. ###If gaming is in the works Windows 2000 Pro is not the best (my opinion). ###I use Windows ME right now ###have not spent much time with XP yet. If video editing is important pick the editing software first and ask them what they recommend. They will know what is the most reliable.

    14. MISC - Case pick a case that has 2 fans 1 front and 1 back. Power supply 300w min and pick a good one. ###With all the stuff your considering it will get hot in there and air flow will be critical. ###Don't run the setup with out the case on long term it will overheat.

    Hope this helps.

    Hey Coyote,

You gotten a bunch of good advice so far.

On the DV editing, from what I've experienced and read in the DV editing forums, it's best to dedicate a puter just for DV editing. The list of nightmares trying to get XYZ DV editing software to work with XYZ driver or MOBOs on certain puters is torture. Definately talk to the vender who's DV editing software you want to run to see what the CURRENT problems and boards to stay away from are.

A buddy battled this problem for a year and then just gave up and bought a Sony MiniDV camcorder and Sony VAIO laptop that was a package deal. No fuss no muss and he turns out good vids with it.

We were abe to get his DV editing working on a 2nd drive and left all the other sotware on the 1st drive using Windoze 98SE. The DV software has gotten a lot better in the past year since we played with it but I still see many problems posted by people putting systems together on the newsgroups and forums.

    Guys
I thank you once again on the advice and links.
I am a little familiar with DV editting I have done a 74 deer video called Bucks Unlimited. ###I have a canon zrmini dv and just sold my canon xl1. ###
This video was compiled with a p2 266, win 98se ,128ram ,20g maxtor 7200 umd and exported back to the cam ten minutes at a time...flawless no dropped frames. ###[I had some sound glitchs and some lock ups but it worked.]
Thats why I belive a 1g machine should handle this task without a problem. ###I will stick to the maxtor drives as my capture card recogizes it and run 98se as well. ###I will also get the ram to a min. of .5 gig cause it's cheap now.
I no nothing about motherboards..chips... bios so I will try to have the kit assemble like Newt said. ###
Thank you guys for your time....If I lived closer I'd be ringing your doorbell right now.. Hehe...yoteee'
