Most Under Rated Turkey Call

In my opinion....The most under rated call is the tube call. Why?? I don't know. I use it and get very good results. What is your opinion?

Chuck, I have yet to try out one of those types of calls. I always been thinking about it, but never got one as yet. Maybe before this comming spring season I'll take the plunge and try one out for sure!!! Makes sense because not to many people seem to be using that type of call, so I think you'll have better luck with it in the spring woods.

I think the tube is one of the best call available. ###I killed a bird the first time I took it to the field. ###I liked it so much I started turning them. ###They are a little difficult for some people to learn, but really work. ###Personally, the diaphram was harder for me to learn.

By the way, I have a friend who hunts GMA land and he will not go without a tube. ###He says the birds have never had one and respond super well to it.

ctwny1 ###The tube call is one i have not used yet. I am too lazy to try it when the others are so easy. A lot of people have told me of their success when using it. I heard Dick Kerby of Quaker Boy calls demonstrate it one time and it really sounded good. He used a tube call for goose calling and it sounded like a flock of geese calling. But the he is a world champion caller. I will have to give one of those a try. ### ### ### ### ### ### Fubar

I myself havn't tried it yet. But a good friend of mine used one this past spring and said " I wish I had this years ago".
He had birds coming in left and right. Well he sold me on them.The next call I'm going to get will be a tube.

I forgot to mention this. ###You can do a jake half gobble on it really well and it gets the big birds fired up. When I am working a bird and I feel like a full gobble will scare him (being a subdominate bird) I do a half gobble and a lot of times he'll work in closer to get a good look.

If you're talking under-used, then I'd say tube call or wingbone; if you're talking under-rated, I'd say the box call.

ctwny1, I couldn't agree with you more. ###I have a whole arsenal of store-bought turkey calls and none of them come close to my homemade tube calls. ###Nothing combines such a mix of versatility or realism as does a tube call. ###On what other call can you yelp to a hung up gobbler and then cut your own yelp off with a gobble, a combination that inspires rage in all but the most cautious of jealous birds. ###While most other turkey calls are limited in the number of turkey sounds they can make, a tube call can make ANY verbal sound a turkey can. ###Period.

Other calls excel in some ways, but still do not offer the versatility. ###Friction calls have amazingly authentic sound quality, true, but suffer from inconsistency and bad weather. ###Diaphragm calls are great to conceal motion and for close in calling, but turkeys on public land get so accustomed to them they flat ignore them. ###Other calls are good at one kind of call, such as yelps, but can't do others.

Tube calls, on the other hand, are simple and cheap to make (see my thread on the homebrew forum http://www.jesseshuntingpage.com/cgi-bin/i...21&topic=3), are easily tuned and can make any sound a turkey can make. ###They are louder than any other call for locating, but can be as soft as anything out there as well. ###And, as already mentioned, tube calls can be used on other game as well.

With practice, you can do goose sounds, dying rabbit cries, coyote howls, fawn bleats, squirrel barks, and elk "mews" all on one tube call. ###They are just amazing. ###Yes, they take some time to learn, but once you do learn them, you'll never be without one again.

So, take this prescription -- put those other calls up, take two tube calls, and call me in the morning.

Thanks for sharing your tube call plans. ###I did make one back in the spring and think I got by ok with making the basic sounds. ###I'm new to turkey hunting and unfortunately don't have anyone to show me the ropes. ###What would you or anyone else out there recommend to a newbie on how to learn calling?

Nini, I recommend a Slate or Glass. ###A lot of turkeys can be called in using just a cluck. ###It is easy to do on a slate.
