well this was my second time drawing a ewe tag in the chugach range just outside anchorage and this was my 4th time on a sheep hunt. once was just to help my buddy pac.
we drew on a party application so we both got tags. normally we just carry our recurve bow's to hunt with. this time the wife talked me into adding the rifle to my pack since i have never taken a sheep.
we planned to be up the mtn for five days and come down for more food for another five days if needed.
we camped at 4500feet and could spot sheep just about everywhere. we spotted some ewe's making there way down the mtn from across the valley so we moved down to keep an eye on them. they crossed the creek and started sidehilling below us. we followed and kept dropping altitude when we could. at one point the closest i got was about 40 yrds away to far for my recurve i needed to be 20 yrds.
my buddy worked up to me when they dropped into a small ravine. i put my bow down and got my rifle ready i shot mine at 80 yrds handed him the rifle and after a long time thinking he took one at 150yrds as they were standing there looking at the one i shot. we had them down by 2pm we walked into camp at dark around 10pm sometime. it took us ten hours to pack out the next day just before the big storm hit anchorage that flooded the streets. my partner cant stop saying how glad he is we got off the mtn before the storm hit.
my buddys ewe. acording to fish and game his was 6 1/2 yrs old mine was 5 1/2 i lost our little side bet
