Just thought I'd post up a poll to find out who from JHO is going where on the opener. I think a lot of us have tradition in our blood and go to the same area for the opener. I'll be in Yuma again this opener, this being my 23rd year straight there. We always seem to find a spot with mucho dove and avoid the droves of hunters in the more popular hot spots.

If anyone is headed down that way for their first time and don't know where a good spot is, I'll be glad to help, just gimme and email.

Oh yeah, if anyone tells me I look like Roger Raglin again in the photo below, bite me.......

Oh! Thats you, I thought for a moment that Roger was just on the outing with you! Maybe you could double for him on his shows and get some extra hunting time in.

I can't make the opener on Wednesday, but I'll be down in the Imperial Valley before sun up, on Friday. Staying through Sunday after the morning shoot, then heading home!
Maybe you'll push some birds out west for me, hope so anyhow!
If the weekend is slow, I should be able to make up for it in November, the second season has been pretty good for me! Although, the main game is pheasant!
Keep your eyes peeled for cock(birds)
Keep your shots above your shoulders!

I'll drink to that, John! Bring on the doves and the asada.
Oh and as far as Mrs 5stand goes, no problem there she's a rarity when it comes to respecting my insatiable appetite for hunting all game.It also helps when she wears her daisy dukes and distracts the other hunters while shes smokin them duvs.

I'll be hitting a local spot before work on Wed, then back out there after work. Heading down to the valley for a Saturday morning shoot, then back home.

Funny, but I'm not really excited about dove season this year. My thoughts have wondered to that big Elk somewhere in Colorado that has a timer around its neck.

1000 Palms to where an acquaintance allows me to hunt on his land. Convenient, productive. Watch: Now that I've bragged about it there won't be a single bird there this year.

I am heading out to Blythe again this year. I going to a new stop by the river this year. We use to hunt by the Groves but it sucked last year. So lets see what happens this year. Either way we'll be having a good time.

I'll be heading to the IV fields with me, myself, Irene and 16 cups of coffee at 1:30AM on the first. Then again the Motel 6 in El Centro has rooms available for the low, low price of only $35.99 Tuesday night. A heads up for any of you who would be too tempted to hit snooze at 1:00AM!

I'm in the SF bay area but don't mind the drive for a little dove hunting. Heading down to San Miguel (Paso Robles) to a family friends ranch. They have the perfect little honey hole...a very small pond bordered with a few oak trees. Once the fog burns off the birds just pour into the area. Looking forward to a good 45 minute shoot.

Just scouted Imperial Valley yesterday. I'm originally from Indiana and haven't hunted dove before. Looks like a lot of dove out there. Going to give it a whack (solo) on Saturday and Monday. Should be interesting.

Any advice on which fields in the I.V. will have the least pressure? Sounds like you'll have to line up right next to someone in all of the fields. I'm used to hunting pheasant and duck with no one around.

Anyway, should be fun as long as I can hit something.

Just a quick tip for anyone going to Arizona;

Go to the Arizona Dept. of Fish and Game website and purchase your liscense, sure is easy, just fill out a short form and print out your liscense. Don't forget to also order a migratory bird stamp (3 bucks)!

Best of luck to all of you, I'll post a report when I get back Friday evening!!!

After work I plan on going to the Oak hills area. I need to find a place to stash the shotgun during the day. For some reason they don't like it when people bring shotguns to elementary school parking lots.

Greg,

Where abouts do you hunt Oak Hills? Down by the tracks? is there a lot of unposted land? I'm not going to make the IV opener, but I work in Corona and could do an after work shoot in the area.

Kynigos,

I hunted Maricopa and Carizzo during the last opener. Zip for Carizzo, but and only 2 birds in Maricopa, but that was without prior scouting. It took me all morning to find out how the birds flew, but come the evening I had them zeroed and finished off my limit. I talked to one hunter last year at Carizzo that limited out in the morning, but he was shooting off of private land and was next to a water source. Knowing where the water is is probably key.

Jesus, your report sounds like were going to have some shoot'n. We've been shooting property (almonds) owned by a dairyman in Pixley. Keep your eyes open for a white Chevy 2003 Silverado pickup.
