I bought a set of satelite broadheads last year and I used one to make sure my tuning was proper.
I tried sharpening it with a file, and a honing stone but I can't get it sharp enough. It's sharper than factory but that's not much.
any tips?
can you really shave arm hair with your broadheads?
Its pretty hrad to get them super sharp by hand.. especially with a file..
Well it funny you should ask..
This is something I have been playing around with for a bit now. I recently bought an Arkansas stone which is a really neat, kind of expensive natural stone that is super fine.. almost polishes the blade. I have been re-sharpening lots of my old blades and am starting to get them pretty re-sharp. I have done some minor rubber band tests to check the sharpness and they are sharp.. I want to take "me" out of it for consistancy sake and setup a jig that repeats accurately across the stone's surface at 18-20 degrees. I noticed a few different types of jigs in cabelas' new Archery catalog and I think "cold steel" came out with a pretty cool sharpening system for any make of blades... Being a machinist I came up with something very similar for my own personal use..Blades definately can be re-sharpened. Make sure you do so.
I really don't do the hair test but I do stretch several rubber bands through a coat hanger fixture I made (not to tight) to replicate arteries in an animals body. I run my recently sharpened broadhead by hand through the band to see if they move a side or if the pop!! I thought it kinda duplicates veins and arteries more realisticlly in an animals body.. Hope this helps..

This topic is near and dear to me...
I always sharpen my heads, Never use them strait from the box. Imho there just not sharp enough, when doing band and split hair tests. Heres a thread from Archery Talk speaking on this very topic. If you never have been to this forum, check it out. Its a excellent site.

Nice post. I read the article at archerytalk.com. I really enjoyed it, thanks Dan. I do have that very stone he mentioned for 4 blade broadhead resharpening and have not got the same results in the past. I found my blades were sharp at the tip and not the front. I didn't use the reverse wood technique he mentioned that polishes the edge. Thanks for the tip. I will revisit my old stone to see if it was just me and my lack of patience in the past. I still am going to play with my new stone too. Great results real fast. TY..

Nice post.
Those tru angle hones look good but the satelite broadheads I use have 2 long blades and 2 short blades.
I don't think it would work well.
Any tips?
in2blacktail, do you have any pics of your jig? I would love to see it.
Thanks for all your help.
Give me a couple of days and I'll post it for ya.. I think it would work fine for your set-up.. It will be able to do bleeder blades and regular blades. I edge at a time.. Thanks for the interest.. I won't forget..

Can't really give much advice on the 4 blade heads as I shoot 3 blade heads and use a couple of stones and work up to fine stone with very light pressure. My fine stone has leather on the back and I strope it in reverse over the leather.
Come hunting season my arms and legs are half bald due to verifying knife and BH sharpness. The wife always makes fun of me that I look like I have mange. But to answer your question, yes I always ensure BH's shave hair.
Hey in2blacktail,
Any status on those pictures?
