I'm wanting to modify my 10-22 and here are the mods I'm contemplating.

1. Volquartson trigger hammer. Is anything else needed in the trigger? Just how tricky is honing the factory trigger, really?

2. Modifying either the original carbine stock or a deluxe sporter style (birch wally world special) that I just picked up to fit my 6'1" frame.

3. Auto bolt release.

4. Bolt buffer. Brand suggestions? Looking at Hawk Tech.

5. Tactical Solutions factory contour 16.5 inch barrel. This is the one I'm least informed about. It seems these aren't popular at RFC and so no one will comment on them or acknowledge their existance. They ain't made by Green Mountain, Lilja, Clark, or Volq. so it doesn't exist I guess. How about it PMI? IN all those barrels you've tested has there been a TS among them? How did it do?

6. Looking for a 2-7 or 3-9 X32mm scope. Preferrably a compact. Curious how important AO is for popping squirrels? Open to suggestions.

What am I missing? What would you do differently?

Well I’m not MPMI but I can help some on this
1 Just get the hammer I’m not much for the volquartson trigger you can modify the factory trigger but drilling and tapping it for the over travail screw. AS for honing the factory trigger you can do it but it’s best to have a trigger jig plus if you mess it up now you have to replace the hammer any ways.
2 Sounds good add some to the but of the stock and paint it.
3 Easy just take the little spike off on the factory one and you’re done. I can e-mail you picks of what to do and what to take off.
4 Still don’t know about this one I have one in my 10/22 but don’t know if it helps or not I think it’s more of a money part then anything.
5 Sorry no help on this one don’t have and have never had a Tactical Solutions barrel. I do have a 16.5 Green MTN match chambered barrel on my 10/22 now in a BC folding stock ( just go to love preban stuff good thing it came with the rifle ) with a Weaver fixed 4 power scope. The barrel shoots great have not really put it on paper but to site it in.
6 Sound good if you keep it to a rimfire scope the AO will not play as big a roll but a I do have to say the fixed 4 power scope I have now is really nice don’t have deal with an AO at all.

The one thing you can also do is an extended mag release. You can do it your self with an old 22 cleaning rod or you can pick up an aluminum rod from the hardware store a drill bit just a little larger them the rod and some JB weld.

MEnglish,

Sorry for the tardy response (work's been kinda busy here the past few days).

WBH covered a lot of stuff that you can do.

As to the trigger, you can get by with just a sear. The hammer and sear combo just helps remove any perceived creep in the end results. You can use a jig (as WBH mentioned) but if you don't intend to do many triggers, it's asteep investment. I beieve my Powers Series 1 jig ran $120 with one specific jig. Since I work on many different actions, I figured I'd be money ahead. As I said, it greatly depends on how many firearms you have, or plan to have.

As to the Tactical Solutions Barrels...I haven't shot their .22cal barrels, so I can't honestly say. I do know their .17 barrels leave a lot to be desired, at least they DID NOT group well out of a prototype barrel they made for a particular ammunition company. They have since switched to using Green Mountain barrels and blanks for the development and testing. Rick (the GM) has indeed brought Green Mountain's name to the forefront of economical, yet accurate 10/22 barrels. Kudos to him and his production team and staff.

As far as the scope...it's a personal choice in my book. The AO helps resolve any parallax issues, and is added insurance to having an accurate sight picture. This plays heavily if you have a stock that is hard to get a consistent stock weld, or rings that are too high and cause you to have to "peek up" into the scope. Stay clear of the 50mm obj scopes. In my experience they are just too high for .22 actions, and play havoc with calculating bullet drop (mainly due to the increased angle between bore and sight) as well as the severe trajectory once you get past 50-75yds.

Weaver has a new "Rimfire" 3-9X32mm AO scope that looked to be a dandy for rimfires. I have NEVER been disappointed by Weaver scopes, and are well worth the money they cost. They represent (IMHO) what Leupold used to; a value for the cost that most shooters can afford.

The bolt buffers, while not required, do reduce some wear and tear on the aluminium receivers (more importantly the pin hole that the bolt stop pin resides in). Also, if you plan to fire subsonics from it, it cuts down on the noise (as the "clack" of the bolt slamming back will become the predominant sound if a the original bolt stop pin has not been swapped out with a polymer buffer).

Well, hope that answers some questions. Let us know if you have others...

Thanks for the responses.

Wildbirdhunter, I had considered the extended extended mag release. I see how it could be beneficial but was concerned about bumping it and losing a magazine. Have you ever had this problem? I don't carry my gun loaded when hunting with my feist but pop in the clip at the tree, however sometimes you can chase a squirrel as it "timbers" for a hundred yards or more. Ever try finding a magazine in the fall when theres 6 inches of leaves on the ground? I have and its worse than the needle in the haystack problem.

I'll for sure email you about those pictures when I get ready to tackle that bolt release. One thing I have noticed is that it is a bear to get that silly thing to release when Mr. Busytail is bouncing around and the dogs are barking and all.

MPMI, I hadn't seen the Weaver. I'll check it out for sure. I was thinking that if it was set up for rimfire distances that the AO wouldn't be necessary. I have considered a straight 4 or 6 power but if that silly squirrel is moving just a little bit those higher powers are tough to find him in.

I'm concerned about the Tactial Solutions option now that I've read your post about the .17 versions. As much as I'd like to stay factory contour what about the Whistle Pig fluted barrels. I guess for that matter the carbon fiber barrels would then be an option. Any advantages of one over the other? I guess I just like the idea of a barrel being all metal...even if it aluminum. Was hoping for a super lite gun but maybe I'll just try the accuracy of the factory barrel. HMMMMM????

I also should mention that I have nothing against Green Mountain or any of the other barrel manufacturers I mentioned. Just hard to get info on anything else at RFC and... well I guess I won't go there.

By the way as long as were talking 10-22 how soon until I can convert it into a 10-17 Aguilla? Oh and have ammo for said conversion?

I guess the Volquarston trigger hammer is the way to go then? Or is there another better/comparable/cheaper version? At what benefits?

Well I’ve never had a mag fall out but could see it happing. Don’t have a lot of woodland like that in CA.
As for the barrel I’ve read good stuff on the whistle pig barrels but as for the CF barrels had one ( high end one at that )at one time but not any more if you get what I’m saying. If your looking at factory contoured barrel not a lot of people make them any more. I do know the GM is coming out with a fluted factory contoured barrel. I think GM and one other person is making a factory barrels. I guess you could always have Randy at CPC sit the factory barrel back re-chamber and re-crown it.

You got it.

ME,

Natchez is listing it in their catalog now, though Weaver has not updated their website yet to reflect the addition to their line of scopes.

If your heart is set on a light weight bbl, but with the stiffness of a bull barrel then your thinking is along the correct path. A tensioned or shrouded barrel is the way to go. If you're willing to wait a month or two, there will be something coming out that will fit your bill. Don't ask, I can't say more (sorry). I'd (personally) steer clear of the CF barrels, but that is my own personal opinion.

You can buy .17 barrels now from GM. On the ammo...no comment

I've been considering some of the same mods you guys have been talking about, and was wondering if someone could speak on the carbon fiber barrel issue a little more. I get the impression that they wouldn't be the first choice for you guys looking for an accurate AND lightweight barrel. Why not? What are some of the drawbacks to think about?

Thanks

OK gang I sure appreciate you sharing all your helpful knowledge with me and the others in this forum. I got my stock today so I think I'll start modifying that soon. Also will order the VQ trigger hammer and when I'm ready to tackle that I'll look at the auto release issue as well. As for the barrel and scope I'll wait and see what MPMI has in the way of pending surprises before making a decision. Hope its what I think it is.

By the way I just saw a pick of a guys 10-22 with a fluted factory contour barrel. Very intriguing indeed!

ME,

Yes, the factory fluted contours are indeed nice barrels. Accurate too. Oh yeah, that reminds me, I've got to pull that barrel to give AMMOe his spare action back! Ha! It's a good thing I picked up a few extra actions awhile back (I figure English, when he comes out from Scotland, will need something respectable to shoot).
