Waiting on decent weather, have been casting and reloading for the 45-70 and .50 Hawken. Have all my cartridges loaded, 1200rds. and have just counted 880 535gr. Postell that I have been casting. Haven't counted the others, but it's a wad of them. I'm ready to do some fair weather shooting. What about you all? Anyone casting?

One hundred and fifty Pedersoli .545" buff-busters from pure lead last night. There's something about a mold that casts well on a cool evening that keeps you humming along. When the metal temp is right and the tunes are good you can lose track of time.~AMMOe

PS: If there are any of you that are shooting "nitrated" paper cartridges and can't find Potassium nitrate to make into solution, give me a yell. I found a local drug-store that sells it over the counter for $2.45 a jar.

It is hot and humid here in the summer time so I do all my casting in the winter. I know what you mean about cool temp and good casting mould. Sometimes you hate to stop.

Nazgul: I hear you! (early) Summer has arrived here with a vengance. It was almost 100 degrees yesterday when I was at the range, tho down to 76 after dark. I need to get back out and cast up some more bullets for my Sharps. I managed to shoot off most of the ones I'd made over the last week! I'd sure hate to have to be buying those bullets!~AMMOe

    Q-4570

I just picked up a 117gr mold for my 260 Rem they will be my first cast bullets in it, out of all the Calibers you hardly ever see any 264 dia on sale and if they are there 140gr, I bought the gun to shoot lighter bullets 85 to 120gr but mostly 100gr Nosler BT so the 117gr should give me some more down range time at a very low cost

I've been hunting 15+ years. Just getting into reloading and casting. I've got over a 5 gallon pail of weel weights to melt down. I've been waiting for a sunny day so I can make some ingots. Then off to the lee production pot to do some boolite making.

Sounds like there are some experts here on this board and that's why I joined.

I just got the following so far:
    RCBS single stage press
    Lee production pot
6 cavity mold from Lee in 45LC
    ingot mold
    scooper
    wax
what feels like a 100+ lbs of wheel weights
I got a lot more to gather and I will in time. In time I'll be asking lots of questions.

I just melted down more wheelweight lead from the past month, brings the total up close too 80lbs. I've been mixing it 9lbs wheelweights to 1lbs lead shot & have had pretty good luck with the 45 228gr hp bullets & the 170 & 130gr 30 cal bullets. The 45 mould is a LEE, the 170gr isa Machmiller? & the 130 is a Lyman.

lol Quigley, unfortunatly most of that 80lbs is in ingots since I have a hard time keeping the kids away from the bullets when I cast (try to do it after they go to bed lol). Now all I need is a sizer here at the house so I can do it all hear instead of crating it all over to dads to finish the bullets lol.

Just checking to see if anyone has been casting lately? Same ole, same ole here...the 535gr. Postell and REAL bullets/roundball for the .50 muzzleloader. Need to get some .44 roundball cast for my C&B revolver.

Actually winter is nice for pouring lead. A space heater in my garage and a jacket and safety equipment and your ready to go. I've got a RCBS melt pot and moulds. I pour for pistol only. I've tried rifle but don't shoot enough to make it worth my time. I pour for 44 (250 Keith) and 225 grain bullets as well as 124 grain trancated bullets for my 9MM. The only drawback is those really cold days when you can't crack the door open for ventilation. Still it's a great time for sizing bullets etc. where you don't need ventilation.
