Hey guys - what are the basic differences between these two? Both are .22LR necked down to .17 right? Is it just FPS - I think the Aguila is 1850 and the Mach II is 1620.

MarinePMI, AMMOe I'm waiting for your clarifications

    FS,

The Aguila is a standard .22LR case necked down to .172" at 1850fps.

The Hornady Mach II (HM2) is a .22 Stinger case (.1" longer) necked down to .172" at 2100 fps.

The HM2 uses a .17gr VMAX and the Aguila uses a 20gr JHP (hence the lower velocity). It is still up for debate on which is better or more accurate, but time will tell, eh? I have not shot the HM2 so can only hypothesize on it's performance.

A Hornady engineer had told me at the SHOT Show that after 100yds, there was an issue with proper expansion of the VMAX round (which in some ways could be a good thing) as was seen with the .17HMR @ 150yds.

Again, everything is conjecture until both cartridges make it to market and can be tested side by side.

I stalk a real world of dark wood and tall grass stirred by a restless wind blowing across sunlit water and beneath star-strewn sky. And on those occasions when I choose to kill,....I do so by choice, quickly, and with the learned efficiency of a skilled hunter." -- M. R. James

    MarinePMI,
After checking out those .17 Aguila rounds you had down at Wister I have a question for you. Its a rimfire, Rimmed case with a shoulder from the necking down to .172. does the shoulder of the case come into play for headspacing or is it done from the rim like a regular .22?

AMMOe Since its done by the rim is there a shoulder in the chamber slightly oversize to keep the case shoulder from blowing out when its fired?

I'm not sure I'm following you. In an exacting world, the shoulder of the cartridge should be against the shoulder of the chamber when the round is inserted. No gap. (In other words, the cartridge is an exact fit in the chamber.) Is that what you're asking? ~AMMOe

I must have had a early monday morning brain fart. Just couldn't see past the idea of it being based on a .22 rimfire. It would have to have a chamber shoulder to match the case shoulder.
