I have a Synthetic stock (factory stock) that took a bit of abuse this deer season. Anybody have any ideas how I can smoothout the scratches without destroying the stock? I was thinking of getting some extra fine grit sandpaper and testing it out. Too early to throw out the stock and get a McMillan etc. I may also just let the "character marks" stay, but if I can recondition easily I will.

If you're talking about just the black synthetic (read: plastic) stocks I probably wouldn't sand them. Most of these are molded with a rough texture to them. When you sand them there will be a reall matte finish rough texture there. If the scratch is deep enough to bother you, one edge of it may be sticking out. Take a sharp knife or box cutter and just cut off the part that sticks out. And, yeah, the "character" marks will stay.
