Howdy! I know this doesn't effect my gun's accuracy but I want to be ready so I can accually a running deer this year. What chokes and ammo do you use in your Mossy 500 12GA for deer (running) and ducks? I am not trying to brag or anything, but I am a good sho, but I just can't seem to hit running deer. I have a Modified and XX-Full stock turkey choke. The book said not to use buckshot with the XX-Full. But I want the tightest pattern for deer. I always pull the trigger where I need to, but they just slip through the pellets it seems. Thanks,

The cheapest route would be to buy rifled slugs and use your modified choke for deer hunting. You should be able to get more distance and accuracy with a rifled slug. You could also buy a rifled slug barrel and use sabot slugs. I bought a rifled slug barrel for my gun and it shoots very good. I easily get 3" groups at 100 yards. I haven't shot much further than that, but I have heard they will shot further with accuracy. I think hitting a running deer with a shotgun is a much bigger challenge than with a rifle. I try to do all I can to get the deer to stop before I shoot. I am not confident enough in my shooting skills to try and shoot at a running deer, plus it's kind of hard to practice a shot like that. I hope this helps you out. As for ducks, I have no clue.

    Va,

You need to get a rifled or smooth bore deer barrel. In the rifled barrel you use the sabot slugs and in the smoothbore you use the rifled slugs. It is not reccomended to use slugs with normal screw in chokes but I do believe you can get a special rifled screw in choke for slugs. As for buckshot I am not a fan. It is really only effective at close range say 30 yards and in. I assume you are either walking or driving deer so you need to shoot at the deer on the run. Check out hastings barrels. They make barrels for all kinds of shotguns especially deer barrels. I think you will have much more success with slugs and the right barrel. My winchester 1300 with a smoothbore deer barrel with rifle sights is what I walk with. I had a scope on it and it will shoot a 6"group at 100 yards. 12 guage slugs put a really big hole in a deer! Any other questions feel free to ask.

oh yeah, BTW, I can't use slugs where we run dogs. I personally hate using a shotgun on deer. I would much rather use a .30-30 or .270 or something like that. I also don't prefer running dogs. But anyway I have to stick with 00B. Thanks,

my club is the same way. shotguns and buckshot only.try full and modified and see what patterns best. my 11-87 does well with modified choke but my son uses a mossberg 500 foll choke and its good too. you also need to try different loads, different manufacturers and even different lengths. just because your gun will handle 3 inch or 3 1-2 inch loads that doesnt mean you will get the best results from them. pump shotguns really pack a punch so dont try to do all of this in one day or you wont get YOUR best results by the end of the day.
hunt with your kids not for them
