Hey guys! The names Dave and I live in Palm Desert, CA. I've been around the site for a while but mostly evesdropping. I've been chasing mulies since I can remember. Grandpa and uncle would take me with them to the hills of So. Cal every chance they could. I hunt with any weapon that I can get a tag for but I do prefer to archery hunt. I apply in most western states for deer, elk and antelope in a few. My dream hunt is to hunt the Az. Strip again. I drew the tag in 00 and killed my best buck to date. A typical 4x4 that grossed 187, but now I want a big NT. I try to get an archery tag for the central eastern Sierras every year, as well as a tag for my local mountains, D19. Thanks for the great site. Good to be here!![]()
My name is Jason and i live in southern Utah. I grew up in southern Calif. hunting deer, quail, dove, ducks, geese etc. Basically anything that was in season. Fished alot too. I had a passion for mule deer from an early age. My Dad took me out hunting in the hills around where we live when I was really young. When I would get tired, he would carry me up on his shoulders. I loved being out there. At age 12, he let me get out of school and go with him on his annual Utah trip. The mountains, the colors, and the deer and Elk I saw amazed me. I knew from that point on where I wanted to end up.
I've lived in Utah now for over 12 years. I spend alot of time scouting, hunting mule deer. My Dad and brothers come from Calif. to hunt with me every year. I got my Dad into archery hunting 6 or 7 years ago. He enjoys it. Now, that my dad is getting older, the tables have turned. I now help him get his bucks. I scout all summer and find some good ambush points for him to set up. I then hike around and do pushes for him. Or we glass bedded bucks together and make a plan to get withing bow range. It works pretty well. But mostly it's our once a year time together enjoying a passion we both have.
I live in Elk Grove, CA....Grew up hunting up and down the state, as my dad was in Fish and Game. Great way to grow up! Started out in Kern county and moved to Hornbrook on the Klamath Rvr. Finished grade school there and then moved to Idependence, Owens Valley area. Freshman year there and then moved to Mammoth Lakes....Graduated HS there. If you can hunt it in CA I've pretty much done it except for Sheep and CatsHave also hunted WY, OR, NM and AZ.....Love to Bow hunt along with Pheasant, Waterfowl and Upland.....Came to the Sacramento area with service in 85/86...Stayed here with my career in law enforcement there after....Glad I found the site!!!

James. I hunt mostly in Western South Dakota. I do some hunting in Canada as well. I started hunting mule deer in 1955. There is hardly a caliber that I have not used but I have taken the most deer with the 308 257 Roberts 250 Savage and 6.5x55. The mule deer population here is as high right now as it is anywhere in the U.S. I just dream of quite a few years of the same old thing. I have land of my own and access to many thousand more ACRES OF prive land of my nieghbors. GOOD HUNTING TO ALL HERE![]()
I'm from a small town in the central California Sierras where I hunted D3,D4,X7a,and X7b. Now I call Reno home (don't have to shovel as much snow ).
I've hunted most Western states including Nevada, Montana, Idaho, Oregon, Wyoming, and Colorado. I've hunted with family and friends since the sixties, usually hunting two states per year.
I shoot a pre 64 Winchester 300 ICL ( instant clavicle loosener Ha ! ), a 270 Remington, and now a new Browning A Bolt 11 ( won by my wife at the Elk Foundation Banquet ) in 7mm WSM. Gave her a Leopold 3X9X50mm for her birthday and now I'm all set. Actually, I came up with a piece of very shiney jewelery for her birthday and now we're both happy !
My dream hunt would be to hunt any of the Hunt Areas North of I80 in Nevada for the whole season. Our seasons are about 4 weeks long and to have that much time off to hunt big bucks would be Heaven.
I think about Mule Deer hunting 365 days a year. It's what I live for. Still looking for that once in a life time buck !

Every hunting season you miss is one you can never make up
Hey Guys, I am from Saskatchewan, Canada and I have hunted mulies in south western Saskatchewan. I have only gone once but would love to go again.
There is room for all God's creatures, right next to the mashed potatoes.
I've ived in the Phoenix area since 1980, but grew up in central Minnesota.
Have only taken two mule deer in Az. I use an Interarms Mark X in 30.06, topped with a Elite 4200 by Bushnell. The bullets are Barnes blue XLC 180 ggr. A great setup! Oh, and I even put a KDF muzzle break on , man now even my wife can shoot 20 rounds and nort complain.
As much as I know the AZ Strip/Kaibab are hot spots, I would love a wilderness hunt, going in on horses, wall tents etc. in Montana or Colorado.

Hi Everybody,
I live in the eastern Sierra's. Been hunting Mule Deer since I was 12 thanks to a great dad. Drew X9A last two years and made the most of it. This year couldn't even draw X9C so I got a D-7 tag. Dad drew X9A though, so me and my brother will be bird dogging. Then in October all 3 of us will be hunting the Book Cliffs in Utah. We prefer hunting the Kaibab but haven't been drawn since '94 when they went to a 10% nonresident draw. We put in for Nevada too but tags have been hard to come by.
Good luck to everyone.
Howdy,
I was born and raised in the Eastern Sierras. I am currently living in good ol' Nevada. My passion is strictly mule deer hunting. I eat, sleep, and drink it! I can thank my Dad and Brother for this obsession. I prefer to hunt X9A. I also enjoy hunting Nevada, Utah, and other western states when I can draw them. This year I drew a limited entry deer tag for Utah, just counting down the days. Good luck to everyone this upcoming season!

SOLA FIDI
From North Carolina by way of West Virginia. I like to hunt them near Grassy Crick southwest of Meteetsee, WY
I live in Oregon and hunt Mulies (when I'm lucky enough to draw) in south-eastern Oregon -- just north of the California/Nevada/Oregon border. It's called the Oregon high desert because it roughly 5500 to 6500 feet about sea level. It's very interesting and incredibally rough country.

Well I've posted on the board, 'spose I should tell my story, short.
I live in Clovis CA, from Springfield MO 3.5 yrs ago. The mule deer thing has been tough, moving from gun and hunting paradise to this place *I was nuts and needed a job*
I shoot an A-bolt Heritage .270 with Leupold optics that I found for a steal out of Reno and several bows *all cheap*
Have yet to even see a legal buck in CA, but 2004 is the year, I can feel it....
Dream hunt: Dad and I hunting caribou and catching salmon in AK...

Hey guys, I have been in Fresno for past 10 yrs, came from TN, and have hunted Muleys for past 2 seasons. This Cali hunting is obviously harder than whitetail hunting back in TN. In the 80's a person could hunt 4 bucks with a rifle per season along with extra hunts like muzzle loader, bow. Much easier to bag a buck there. Hard enough to see something legal to shoot here. I mostly hunt d7 for muleys. jackrabbit has taught/shown me most everything about these mule deer particulars that are just so foreign to a whitetail hunter like myself. I mean I never heard of migrating deer, winter/summer ranges etc.

Hey all!
I was born and raised in central California (Fresno Co.) and have been hunting mulies since I was twelve. I've been going into the field with my dad since I was about 10. I grew up hunting D-8 near Big Meadows, Sequoia Montecito area. I started hunting D-7 about 6 or 7 years ago. I shoot a Smith & Wesson 30-06 given to me by my dad on my 13th birthday. I've only taken 3 deer in all that time (all in D-8) but I still love to get up there when I can. My biggest buck was a forkie back in '94 that measured 17-1/2" inside spread.
My dad and brother just took up archery last year and I hope to follow suit next year.
Since its been 10 years since I last filled my tag, my dream hunt would be a successful hunt!

My ancestors didn't claw their way to the top of the food chain to eat freakin' vegetables.
I was born and raised in socal but lived in Colo. for five years. I hunt bow(Oregon Bow), muzzle(Knight 52) but mostly rifle(custom Rem. 300 Ultra). I hunt all over the west wherever I can draw a quality hunt. I have hunted Az. Co. Ca. Ut. Wy. Id. N.M. and Nv. Have been sucessfull on trophies 3 times. B&C 187,197,200. I hunt Elk sometimes but Muleys are the best.
I have lived in California my whole 22 years of life. I am currently living in Livermore and am a student.
I love to hunt for big mule deer and took my biggest to date this year. My family and I put in for X-12 each year and have gotten drawn twice in the last 4 years. We used to hunt X-12 every year until about 9 years ago. Our second choice is D6 and do pretty well. Nothing real big unless we get a storm.
When deer season is over, duck season begins for me. My second passion in the hunting world.
Also if anyone needs some coyotes or ground squirrels to be shot let me know.

I have drawn 3 Antelope tags 1 for Nevada and 2 for Ca.. I also drew for Nevada 3 times for deer. Also I love hunting up in D-5 at my buddys cabin. Alot of bucks in that unit but you haved to work hardfor a buck.

I am originally from Porterville California but now call Clovis California home. I hunt d-7 and sometimes d-8. I apply everywhere to hunt, Utah, Colorado, Arizona, Wyoming, Nevada, New Mexico and Montana. For the last few years I have worked extra jobs to fund my hunting habit. I have had the great pleasure and luck to have hunted Montana, Wyoming, and Nevada for big mule deer.
I hunt mainly with a rifle, a Weatherby Mark V Ultralight 7mm.
My dad taught me to hunt when I was a kid, but I talk to hunters, read books, scout, and pick up info anyway I can.
I was 10 years old the first time I tagged along with my dad in d-8.
My dream hunt would be the Kiabab or a high country hunt along the Greys River drain in Wyoming.

hey folks,
I have been hunting here in so. cal. for about three years. I am from Oregon and started deer hunting only since moving to Cal. I usually hunt D-13. The deer are very savvy and mostly nocturnal which is discouraging. I have yet to kill my first deer. one close call with a small three-point (no chance for a shot). I use a .270 Savage. I use a bow (Martin) only went once for deer didnt have much time. I would like to hunt Bzones. too far for a solo mission. maybe next year.
I also hope to kill a BIG DOE with archery A 31 or 32 zone either sex. I have to max my options.

Howdy Hunters!
New to site but love to read posts by diehard hunters. Grew up on a farm in Iowa hunting rabbits pheasants partridge etc. with a single shot .22. When I was 13 I actually got a shotgun (hand me down single shot). Now I could hunt deer too!. Slugs in Iowa. Moved to the city when I was 14 (Pop. 1200) but I would walk to the edge of town and hunt with my fiberglass recurve or my single shot 20 every chance I got. Used to have a fishing pole, a shotgun, and a .22 pistol in my truck 24/7 365 days a year with the keys in the ignition. Only thing I ever used my High Power Rifle 22-250 for was fox and coyote. They were about $70 back then. In 87 I loaded up the truck and moved to Cali. It was opening day of pheasant season and I drove by a hundred hunters and their dogs that day. I cried. I gave away the best dog on the face of the earth, my half of the best duck boat on the face of the earth, my half of a hundred decoys, and basically gave away my house ($10,000). Times were tough and I was having to go away for a week at a time to work. I was giving up all for my family. Luckily I discovered California is a weird place but there is hunting to be had here too! (Just not on the way home from work). I've gotten 10 mule deer, a Tule elk, rabbits, dove, ducks, geese, quail, coyote, pigeons, etc. all in California. I hunt D-14 usually, but I did draw X9a once and this year I drew G-3!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Also just got into archery and pla to spend a little time in A31. Dream hunt was G-3 with a 30'' Cali. buck with a bow but I may not be patient enough for that. Will probably bust out the 7Mag. Also want to arrow a big bull elk called in to about 15 yards all hot and pissin' himself. Plan to go for a grand slam on elk since I got me a 7x7 Tule. (is there such a thing as a grand slam of elk?) Sorry for being so long but I got excited readin some stuff on here. Love the hunting stories. Sometime I'll have to tell you guys about the one I killed with a knife. Great site folks! Nice to see I'm not a dieing breed.
from porterville ca , now in kingsburg ca ,,,, northeastern ca , and utah southern and southeastern ,,, savage model 110 30.06 ,,,, any hunts a dream hunt to me , but utah book cliffs ,,,, :big grin santa hat:
I grew up in Park County, Wyoming on Grandad's cattle ranch. But I worked in Northern California for 11 years. First my family lived in Dixon, then headed to Napa in 1984. We left in 1993 for a number of reasons largely related to quality of life issues.
Each September, I hunted mulies in Alpine County, California within the Carson-Iceberg Wilderness. Some very large animals were packed out of this beautiful place! This area reminds me of the Bighorn Mts. of Wyoming. During these years, I also hunted twice in Nevada in the Humboldt Range. Most of these hunts were with a Savage 99 rifle in .308 with factory ammo.
I've lived in Spearfish, South Dakota since 1994. Great mule deer country! I hunted this nice buck with my older Glenfield carbine in 30-30. Hunting 30-30 style puts all the fun back into hunting these amazing animals. I "returned" to the 30-30 for mulies about 10 years ago. It always gets the job done.
My brother and I hunt elk in the Bear Lodge Mts. of Wyoming each year. Many years ago, we shot big bulls and had them mounted. But for the past 25 years or so, we typically shoot young bulls or cows for meat. I've had great luck with .308 and 35 Remington cartridges. My brother hunts with a 30-06 and his wife uses a 7mm-08. My wife and daughter share a custom 6.5mm Swede. These rifles have toppled many elk for us over the years.
