    What is your price range???

If you have the extra cash to spend start looking toward ICOM, Kenwood or Pryme. As a liscensed GMRS user I wouldnt even consider a bubble pack radio as a viable source for dependable communications.

I have a pair of old Maxon 210+3s. They dont have all the bells and whistles but are extremely dependable and can be used with alot of different battery combinations from 2 watt to 5 watt and you can easily build a AA battery pack for use in the field.

You could also consider MURS radio frequency. You can transmit 2 watts with no licsense. I also have a pair of Motorola VHFs that work very good in hilly areas.
