I'm looking for a .300 WSM and I believe I'm going with a Savage. Marine PMI and all you Savage lovers, how do they shoot out of the box? Have you had to do any work on them? Trigger job, machining, action, etc.? I'd appreciate all advice on these. I'm looking at the Savage 11GNS. Any suggestions on model?

I dont own a savage but I hear only good things about them , Some of the newest models are now coming with a adjustable trigger now. I hear they shoot great right out of the box.

I have a 16FSS in 300WSM and its very accurate out of the box,all my savages have adjustable triggers and after removing creep and bringing it down to 3 1/2# it shoots under one inch with winchester 180gr pp.They are light weight(6 1/2#)so they kick with 180's pretty good.I'm thinking of trying one of the Sharp Shooters Supply stocks on mine but haven't yet.I don't think you can go wrong with one,the price and accuracy make them very good deals.I have five savage bolts and they are all good shooters and have had no troubles with any so far.I cycle the bolt a couple hundred times with silicone on it and adjust the trigger. The trigger and barrel will break in with 75-100 rounds.Make sure the barrel don't touch the stock anywhere and is truly floated. You have picked the birch stock one and I usually buy the composite ones but very little difference other than the composites aren't as rigid.I like the stainless ones as they are more weather durable and need no maintance during hunting season. They are a few dollars more but I think they are worth it. The factory blue job is prone to rusting if you don't keep it oiled when hunting in bad weather.Look at the barrel crown and check for any damage when buying as this can effect accuracy.I've never seen one damaged but I always look to be sure.Make sure the allen bolts that hold on stock are tight and go shootin'!

    Yotegetter,

I didn't do anything with mine (M110 - 30-06) out of the box, and it shot great until the scope mounts loosened up. Had to send it back to Savage to have the front holes retapped (they did it at no charge, and turned it around in less than 60 days). Once that was done, I added a Bell and Carlson stock to tame the recoil. It shoots easy 1" groups, and I can get them better if I do my part.

I suppose if I really knew what I was asking for, I could get the trigger adjusted, but that's about the only other thing I can think of that this rifle would need. But since I don't know the difference between a well-adjusted trigger and anything else, I guess this "piece of junk" trigger works just fine.

The thin barrel does heat up, so I give it a break every once in a while at the range to keep the groups tight.

I guess it depends on who owns who, eh?
