Calaveras County sheriff’s deputy was walking through San Andreas Cemetery on Pixley Avenue near Calaveras High School at about 11:30 p.m. while investigating a report of a suspicious person shining a flashlight around the graveyard. As he walked toward his patrol car, he felt an unexplainable urge to turn around, Hewitt said, despite not hearing a thing as the cat snuck up behind him.
“He spun around and saw this lion crouched with its ears pinned back ready to attack literally within feet of him,” Hewitt said. “He yelled at the cat, shined his light in its eyes and drew his weapon.”
If the cat had made any aggressive movements, it likely would have been shot, Hewitt said, but instead it turned and ran off into the darkness.

...but, but aren't they sweet little kitties? PETA and HSUS tells me they are. Just must have been another brutal cop.

I said all along, we'll see more human-lion encounters as a result of the moratorium and that's exactly what it happening now. 20,000 is about triple what a balanced population would be. Carrying capacity...the DFG needs to read up on it.
Human beings only have two ways to deal with one another: reason and force. Force has no place as a valid method of social interaction, and the only thing that removes force from the menu is the personal firearm, as paradoxical as it may sound to some.
The U.S. city with the most restrictive gun laws in the nation, Washington, D.C., has the highest murder rate at 24 per 100,000. The state with the most unrestrictive gun regulations, Vermont, has the lowest murder rate at 0.48 per 100,000.
I have said it all along, NOT and I repeat NOT DFG or Fish and Game Commissions fault. The VOTERS of the state passed the law because the Fish and Game commission/DFG was proposing a mt lion hunting season. Again the VOTERS of this state are the sole reason for the MT lion problem and hole lot of other ones too.
It's true! Lazy people who are now whining are what got that law passed.
You say "lazy people" but even if every hunter in the state went to the polls we are still outnumbered. It IS the DFG's fault the public is not educated on the real dangers of mountain lions be in close proximity to humans. Also the fact that the deer population is rapidly declining has to create some loop hole to manage the deer's man predator
Actually I blame whatever group way back when that wrote the State Constitution for not Putting right in there that wildlife management is the purview of the DFG exclusively and not subject to the whims of the ballot box. Absent that then I'll blame the legislature for not making an amendment to the State Constitution stating such sometime back when that would have been possible to be passed. No matter how much we (hunters) want to turn this around I fear it is too late Blaming "lazy people" is not realistic as we could collectively work our butts off and we're still outnumbered. Its just a sad fact of living in Commiefornia today.

I have to agree with Caninelaw. The PETA-loving sheeple in the Bay area and LA approved the law and it will never be repealed...not in this state. What scares me? The fact that it won't be long before some dipshit will put up a bill to completely bam hunting in CA. I fear it's not too far off. If they get it on a ballot...done deal. Hope I'm wrong, but I've watched the people of this state for 50 years and there's no doubt the vote would not be in favor of hunting. Man I wish I could afford to move.

If the DFG were to push any campaign to educate the public on the benifits of a cat season Moonbeam and his croonies would make heads roll
As a government agency DFG cannot campaign to overturn a legislative law. DFG does try and educate people on the effects of MT lions and overpopulation. But like the saying goes, "you can lead a horse to water but you cannot make him drink" rings true for the idiots and rejects in LA and the Bay.
Didn't realize living in the bay area made me a reject. Heck from what I've read lots of good men and women from the LA area on here as well.

Lions don't see us as a threat in states where we can't hunt them, such as California. There are relatively few attacks on people in Oregon, since we can hunt them and they don't necessarily see us as food, but rather something to be feared.
THE WORST DAY OF HUNTING OR FISHING IS BETTER THAN THE BEST DAY AT WORK
We all know there are good people from both the bay area and LA area. Most people from outside California think everyone who lives in California is a liberal, hippie surfer. We all get our greater regions streiotype.
Before you going blaming certain regions might want to take a look at where the most people live in this state. The bay and LA are the two most populated regions so of course there are more idiots in those places. But don't get it wrong there are morons all over this state. Legalize marijuana and ban hunting what a great state
No offense to anyone in the Bay area or LA...it is merely a fact that the votes in those areas are why we have idiots like Boxer, Feinstein and Pelosi in Washington. Very heavy liberal slant from those areas. Geographically, most of the state is Red, but those two big population areas are heavily Liberal/Blue.

+100 - If we won and lost elections on geographic area the state would be solidly Republican. Unfortunately the liberals tend to congregate in small areas with large population...
...hence the problem...
If you look at this analytically it appears salt air has something to do with the liberal mind set.

Looks like the salt air from the Salton Sea affect Imperial county as well.
A lot of good hunters here in the Bay Area and I find that most people, no matter what their political background might be, once educated on hunting are actually very responsive and open to it. Its when hunting smear campaigns are run that you get people who have never been educated about hunting vote against it. My parents neighbors once saw me pull up with two boars we had taken in the back of the pick up. After they walked over to look it created a dialogue about why I hunt and how it benefits wildlife. By the time I left they learned something and all their preconceived notions where broken down and although Im sure they won't be hunting anytime soon they aren't opposed to the idea. This is why I believe the DFG instead of filming tv shows that further paint hunters in a bad light should be educating the public on the benefits of hunting and the good hunters do. Just my little pipe dream though
The "tv show" you are referring to is "Wild Justice". It is not a production of the DFG, but from "Original Productions". They approached the DFG and asked to do the show, and the DFG agreed. They follow the wardens around and shoot the show-as well as some pretty, lets say... creative, editing. When asked why not show more day-to-day warden activities, the producers said they show the stuff that gets ratings. So that's it. It's all about ratings.
You ever watch "Cops"? All they show is bad guys getting arrested or tazed. You think people want to watch "Cops" to see the officers making friendly interactions with everyone? You think the general public wants to watch a show with wardens checking fishing licenses all day, occasionally writing a ticket? I realize you're a Raiders fan and may have trouble understanding that, but really now.
The DFG does a lot of public interactions such as Sporting Trade Shows, The State and local fairs and other public appearances. If you want to blame someone for mostly showing the hunters or fishermen in a negative light on Wild Justice, blame the producers.
I would still say you have to blame DFG they know what we hunters are saying and going thought, yet they are the ones signing the contact with the networks for the show to stay on the air. The only good thing about the show is my 17 year olds daughter has decided that she would like to become a game warden.

Regardless of who is producing the show the DFG should realize how the show is portraying sportsman. The show does nothing to help the wildlife or the hunters of California so what is the shows purpose? I see how getting ratings helps the tv companies but how is it benefiting this state or even the DFG? Don't think for a second the antis in this state won't use the things on this show as ammo to fuel their campaign to end hunting in this state. I understand your team is terrible and you have nothing else to watch but open your eyes and realize the show isn't helping us its hurting us
My team? Which team is that? And that's pretty funny coming from a Raiders fan. The same Raiders that have been irrelevant for what, about 20 years? You know, the team that passed on drafting Percy Harvin, instead picking Heywood-Bay. Good one. We won't even go with JeMarcus Russel.
Regarding Wild Justice, and it's purpose, as you say...I just read a post where someone said because of the show their daughter wants to be a game warden. It has opened the eyes of thousands who had no clue what game wardens do. Sure the "anti's" will use anything they can to spin it to their own agendas. Maybe you didn't catch last night's episode. Plenty of positive stuff on that one. Do you think it was wrong to show somebody who was illegally trapping getting busted? He admitted to knowingly breaking the laws. Don't you want guys like that busted? It makes everyone look bad. For sure, I have plenty of problems with the show, but I don't have a problem with poachers getting busted on TV.
