Default I did it again....DIY public land hog.

I try to share the wealth, so I guided my hunting partner to this same hog, on public land, a few days ago, but he whiffed on a twenty yard shot. There were two, and I hoped they would come back, so I gave them a few days. Sure enough, this tough sow came into the same general area, with the same other pig, about an hour later than I patterned her, but my patience paid off. I made a pretty good shot and she only ran about twenty-five yards. I had an awesome blood trail (used a Montec), but when I approached, she still had some life in her - amazing. She would have died shortly, but I put another arrow in her to end it quickly. Sure enough, I was by myself (usually the case), so the drag out was murder. Not a big pig, but on public land, I'll take it - should be a great meat pig (about 130lbs.). One of the toughest hides of any sow I've killed, skinning was not fun. Kind of bittersweet, in that, with bear and deer season right around the corner, I know it'll be my last public land hog for awhile. Good luck this fall.8-7-12 public land pig 015.jpg8-7-12 public land pig 008.jpg

Ya know, a lot of archers complain about the Montec blood trails but I haven't seen that's a problem and the damn things fly like field tips. Congrats on bringing home the (public) bacon. Must be No. Cal. eh?
Human beings only have two ways to deal with one another: reason and force. Force has no place as a valid method of social interaction, and the only thing that removes force from the menu is the personal firearm, as paradoxical as it may sound to some.

The U.S. city with the most restrictive gun laws in the nation, Washington, D.C., has the highest murder rate at 24 per 100,000. The state with the most unrestrictive gun regulations, Vermont, has the lowest murder rate at 0.48 per 100,000.

If the arrow goes thru both lungs, it'll leave an excellent blood trail (no matter what broadhead). Southern CA.!

Congrats Wild1. THat's tough sledding on public land down here. I've been chasing one pig here for over 2 years and can't get lucky to catch him where I can take a shot.

In redlands? I saw one in timoteo canyon once driving back home from Moreno valley. Must have been a escape from big horn.

Not Redlands, but thanks for the tip (I'll have to check that out). Have a look further south. Spectr (Jesse), I hear ya - I've been chasing a gnarly boar for almost three years now, got him on trail cam a few times, heard him twice (winded me both times), and seen him only once (for about five seconds), he's just too cagey. Hopefully one day.

Yea, when i used to live there i would drive through the south redlands all the time. Tons of wildlife there. Unfortunately, for watching only . That was the only pig i saw, wasnt domestic. However, i have seen Tons of deer there! My best friends grandfather used to lease orchards and sell oranges in front of his house. You might have seen his stand on Judson and Lugonia. Anyway. I went out with him once to a lease property off of sunset. Was about 6am and the orchard was flooded with deer at least 10-15. There i saw the biggest buck i have ever seen! I don't know if i could handle having activity like that on my property and not being about to do anything about it. It would drive me crazy!!

You can't hunt in Redlands legally, even down in the San Timoteo part. The Nature Conservancy has a trail through there now and they don't take kindly to hunters in their spots.

Wild1, is that big boar all brown? 300 lbs or near that?

    Jesse -

He's more black/dark grey, but about 300lbs. I'll try to post a trail camera picture of him. Hopefully he's not the same one you're after, that way we'd know there's two of them.

Depends on the city and their ordinances. It pays to check first. Some cities back east now have urban bow hunts. Not so much out here in CA but you REALLY need to check first before making a blanket statement like that.

Wild1, this one's brown, looks like a cow from a distance. Freaking tank. Sounds like same general area.

Just making it clear you CAN hunt in some city boundaries and that a person should check to see what the city and country regs are first. That's all. We used to be able to hunt inside the Redlands city boundary before they adopted their no projectile ordiniance.
