Picked up new shotgun today!
Picked up a new Remington 870 Express 12 ga today with black stock. Feels really light compared to my Winchester 1200 that I have had for 25 or more years. Any pros or cons with this gun?

con is the rusting. Make sure you constantly oil it, espcially under the vents in the rib. THe one I had ran like a top.

Wow thats not the first time I have heard that. Wonder why they rust like that? Will do for sure. My kids will mostly be shooting this gun. I've run literally, 10's of thousands of shells thru my 870 over the years. It's a reliable shotgun and not much can go wrong. You can diassemble the whole gun with a nail.
If your going to use if for duck, might want to consider using duracoat on the barrel to prevent rust. It comes in all color's including gunmetal blue.

Big risk in picking such a new design. I'd wait until they at least produce 11 million so they can work the kinks out.
Just kidding of course. The 870's an absolute classic.
I love my 870, 20 GA. it is a slayer. I think that gun can take birds by it self, I dont even need to be there. it has a mat fininsh, it will rust in a second in my hands.
after a day in the field if i dont oil down you can see my hand prints in rust.
called remington about this, their answer was I must have very alkaine sweat.
great gun will buy another, but it will have a camo finish for better durability.

"each shotgun sports non-reflective black matte metalwork" it not a blued finish so it will rust. Matt finish helps keep the cost down with a MSRP of $411.00 on the Remington web site.
I perfer the older Remingtons such as my Model 31.
Mines a wing master and the finish is blue and it will still rust. Wiping it down after a day in the field is a must. Otherwise, that 870 will probably be able to be passed to down 3 generations or more.

Don't even worry about the rust. Just do a custom camo with some spray paint after you beat it up a little. These guns are good workhorses but total beaters. THe finish is just cheap crap so they can sell it at that price. My beretta 3901 has been in the case for weeks after 3 days of being carried in my hand 8 hours a day and not a hint of rust, same with my franchi 48.
Make sure the gun works well and doesn't jam before you drive out to hunt. Do not use cheap winchester bulk ammo from walmart, use the federal. Many of these guns have rough chambers and shells can get stuck in the chamber after firing winchester bulk or 3" loads. If this happens just need a power drill, steel wool, and a cleaning rod to polish out the chamber. They are notorious for this rough chamber issue but I had one it was fine and 2 other guys I hunt with have been using them for 8 and 20 years respectively without ever a problem other then rust.

never shot a 870, have a winchester model 1300"speed pump" tho and love that thing. Pumps are so reliable, i find it hard to say which one is better....personal preference most likely
Rub a little TreWax (wood wax) on the metal, and it will seal it from your hand moisture. Wipe it down after each use, and you're good to go.

The best gun you can get for that price. Every time I shoulder one, it brings a smile to my face. I was 12 when my dad brought home a Wingmaster 20 gauge. First shotgun I ever had. Gota love them. Now the Express is the cheaper version but keep it oiled up and it will shoot forever.

Took my new Remington 870 express out to shoot sporting clays yesterday. Feels a lot different then my old winchester 1300. Remington felt lighter and cheaper but shot great. Only tiny issue was maybe two times the shell didnt eject out all the way when my son didnt pump it hard enough. Just told hime to pump that gun with some umpth and no further problems. Oh yea the other difference I noticed between my old gun and this one was my hand felt slippery on the synthetic stock on the fore-end. I like the gun especially for the price.

after you get a few hundred shells thru it, it'll smooth out the kinks. The 870 is ole reliable.

I inherited a '68 Wingmaster 20 years ago and it is an absolute dream. Its my go-to gun for upland hunts. The action is slicker than snot and I bet your 870 will outlive you. You got a heckuva gun there
