    Default Bull Trout LBC

    IMG_1862.jpgIMG_1865-1.jpgIMG_0860-1.jpgScott Bull Trout 1.jpg

Went bull trout fishing with my dad and his friend Scott yesterday. Biggest I caught was 23.5 inches, second biggest was 21 inches. Scott (on the right) had the bruiser of 28.5 inches and 8.5 pounds. Fished Lake Billy Chinook until late afternoon. Caught them on 4" shad/rainbow imitation flies with heavy sinking lines. These bad boys are by far the strongest trout out there.

Good luck. Can you post a pic of the 4" flies? I'm still trying to get a Musky to hit a bigger fly.
Think me not unkind and rude,

That I walk alone through grove and glen.

I go to seek the God of the wood,

And fetch His word to men.

Nice haul!!. A co-worker's friend was out there about that time catching about that size. They have them like that at Simtustus though few fish for them once the lake opens. The marina operator has picks of them stacked at the creek entrance by the resort just loafing. Usually about 3 weeks before the opener. For those that are interested Billy Chinook is one of the few places left in the lower 48 where you can intentionally fish for and keep (1) bull trout. Some monsters in that reservoir. Also has good fishing for browns, redside rainbows, smallmouth, big kokannee, lots of crawdad, and in the future the opportunity to ambush migrating chinook and steelhead. Fishing is good in the summer though all the jetskis, houseboats, skiboats, and minimalist swinwear worn by the fairer sex makes it difficult fishing.

Crawdad fishing is prohibited by non-tribal members. The bull trout tend to follow the kokanee into deeper water when the water warms. Bull trout fly fishing season on LBC only lasts until early June. After that you have to go over to the dark side (use down-riggers) to get them on the line.

Thanks, yeah they're a helluva fight. Went again on Saturday for 6 total fish, kokanee and bulls, nothing over 15" for me though. Pretty sunny and calm.

Crawdad fishing is prohibited by non-tribal members
Closed for crayfish (except tribal fishery) in Metolius Arm (tribal water).

100 per day unless you are a commercial outfit.

Billy Chinook is about the second best crawdad fishery in the state behind Timothy Lake. Its popular enough that you have to hide and/or guard your traps from theft. You set them and leave overnight and in the am they are gone.

Wow... too bad about thieves. Some people really need to take a look at themselves. Didn't know it was only in the Metolius Arm, good info to know. As always, thanks!
