Great - thank you. Apparently the Senators are starting to feel the heat of the grassroots effort. The question is just if they chose to ignore it or not! Follow up with a phone call when you can (takes literally a minute per office, they just take a note)!

    Update:

The bill has not been voted on - we expect Monday or Thursday next week. Still time to call and fax!

Today I will ask for a big favor of everyone who lives in Ted Lieu's district 28. See map below: Lieu is the one who co-authored this bill. Ted Lieu needs to hear from you - please call and fax to his office - please be courteous and respectful telling his office that you strongly OPPOSE 1221. He needs to realize that people in his district care about this, not just a bunch of hunters from Shasta County.

email (only works if you are in district 28):

Thanks a ton for your help!

I don't understand how Mr. Lieu can author (or co-author) a piece of legislature that has 0 effect or affect in his responsible area. When was the last time anyone ran dogs for bear in Torrance or Redondo Beach? My senator is non-responsive. I hope this bill doesn't pass. What's next? No dogs for duck hunting?

Default Bill passed senate by two votes

A real nail biter today. Unfortunately the bill passed the senate. Here the break down. Note that 2 Republicans voted YES. Without those, the bill would not have passed. Also please note that ALL the Democrats voting against party line or not voting were on our list of targeted senators. This shows you that votes can be swayed if politicians hear from you!

The outcome is unfortunate, but ther are 2 more chances to kill this before we have to write to the Governor. Stay tuned, I'll post back here with a link to a new thread with instructions. Nice job everyone who helped.

Two Republican Senators voted in favor and two did not vote at all. If you live in their District they should be hearing from you on this!

Crap. My rep (Alquist) voted Yes. Looks like I'll have to jump on this more.

    What's the next step, Assembly?

This ugly bill is still alive and kicking, even though we did better than anticipated:

We urgently need your help again - especially if you are in District 50 / Assemblyman Lara's district (Bell, Bellflower, Bell Gardens, Commerce, Cudahy, Downey, Lynwood, South Gate, Florence-Graham and Walnut Park.) Also ask your friends and family for help if they live in in district 50! Map: http://asmdc.org/members/a50/50th-di...h-district-map

Lara holds the key vote now! The bill went through the senate and is now in the Assembly Committee on Water, Parks and Wildlife. The committee voted on it earlier this week and could not pass it: The vote was 4 Reps no, 6 Dems yes, 2 Dems - Gatto and Hernandez abstain and Ricardo Lara (District 50) out sick. They will vote on this again on Monday June 2nd and Lara has the key vote. The antis will push Lara to support this bill. He needs to hear from everyone in California - especially his constituents - so he understands that this really matters to urban folks and that we OPPOSE all anti hunting legislation.

Please fax and call Lara's office and kindly ask him to oppose this bill. Sample letter and contact information below!

    Happy hunting!

    Re: SB1221 OPPOSE

    Dear Hon. Ricardo Lara:

If a special reconsideration hearing is held on SB1221, please vote no. The amendments, written by the supporters of SB1221, impose even more restrictions on the trail hound community. They do not constitute a compromise in any way. Please reject the stereotyping of hunters as criminals and dog abusers.

This matter is better left to the Fish and Game Commission, which was set up to take public input and biological input to make wildlife management decisions.

    Sincerely,

I was in Sacremento tuesday. I hope more of you will be at the Rally July 2nd 2012

    Ca Houndsmen

ATTENTION ALL HOUNDSMEN AND WOMEN, AGRICULTURE/TIMBER/BEEKEEPING INTERESTS, DEFENDERS OF SCIENCE, AND SUPPORTERS OF THE HUNTING TRADITION:

In a highly unusual and questionable move, Senate Bill 1221 will be granted a special session and a FIFTH call for a vote on Monday, July 2, 2012.

There will be no public testimony allowed, and the room the meeting will be held in is so small that few, if any, members of the public will be permitted inside. CHC and COHA will make sure we are in there.

We must not let them slip this bill through quietly, and are therefore urging everyone to come to the Capitol for a No on SB1221 Rally...the more of us that are there, the less likely they will feel comfortable sneaking this bill through.

During our meetings at the Capitol on June 12th, CHC and COHA observed a Yes on 1221 rally with a whopping 53 members of the bill's supporters. The chanting of these 53 people could easily be heard from inside the building.

Now, I ask you, imagine the sound that 1000 of us would make! IT WOULD BE DEAFENING.

We need you there! We need you to make your opinion known by making your voice heard! This is where you will let everybody know where you stand! This is where you will join shoulder to shoulder with your fellow Americans, signs held high, and leave no doubt that you will protect your hounds and our wonderful tradition with every fiber of your being. We cannot lose. We must not lose.

The political scheming and disregard for the will of the people has got to stop. We must take our state back! It must begin here and now!

Join with CHC, COHA, and USSA in defending what is rightfully yours. Do it for yourself. Do it for your hounds. Do it for the houndsmen and women that came before us. Do it for your children and the future generations of hound hunters that are counting on us. Hound hunting must not be banned. Not on our watch!

Gatto voted yes this time and Lara who was out last week also voted yes. We were afraid of this.

Signed. I've hunted bear only once, and it was with dogs, when I was 16. We chased a couple of bears all over western Massachussetts and one almost into Connecticut. I don't plan on hunting bear with dogs, but I'm not against it by any means. I am worried about being able to hunt duck, pheasant with dogs that I have trained in the future. Keep up the fight!

Thanks CAbull - that's exactly the problem at hand: This isn't about hunting bears, it is about animal rights extremists coming after hunting altogether. We have to stand united and fight and not let them "divide and conquer" us.

Default One more round of letters, faxes, calls needed - sample letter attached

    All,

It is in the appropriations committee now - next heard on 8/8 and the financial impact is what's the focus now. It is easy to argue that the almost 6k houndsmen spend some money on their hobby. $10k/year isn't unreasonable = that's 60 mil dollars missing from the economy if they are forced to stop their hobby or go out of state.

Print your letters today and send them to the committee members! Sample letter below. Just 3 "find and replace" for your name, street and city.

Default UPDATE 8/8 - Good News - Bill in Suspense - NEED MORE LETTERS IN THE MAIL TODAY

    All,

The bill went into suspense today. This is really good news. However, for it to die, it needs to remain there and we need to flood the key people with letters in the mail. This will be heard as early as Monday 8/13 again, so your snail mail needs to go out today (8/9) to be on time.

I attached a sample letter below. 5 people need to be addressed specifically, including Governor Brown. Do a "find and replace" 3 times for your name, street and city, 5 envelopes and you are done!

Once the letters are done we really need your phone calls and faxes. That will have time through Friday. That will have to be the whole list of the committee again minus the Republicans which are all firmly in opposition already.

Thanks for all your help and efforts. It looks like we have a crack at it if we give it this final push - please take 15 minutes off your lunch hour or whatever it takes and get this in the mail.

    Thanks!!!

    Jagermeister

Call these people!!! Fax them! Be courteous. It takes less than 2 minutes each office. The assistants will be flooded and usually only let you state your opposition and may ask your name and zip. The phones need to be smoking, especially in the Governor's and Speaker's offices.

Even though I don't really care about doing hound hunting once again, I AM TOTTALY AGAINST THIS BILL, and letters are out today. Just because I don't feel like running after dogs, I understand this is the slippery slope to my duck or upland dog going away. If its not sporting to use dogs to tree a bear, how is it sporting to flush birds with a dog or have a dog chew on a wounded bird. That is the antis next rallying cry for all the people who still belive it won't happen to use.
