Don't do it. Against the law here. As this fellow found out. Form the state police newsletter:
Sr. Tpr. Caldwell (Burns) contacted a subject hunting chukar who had been in the area for the better part of a week. The subject told Caldwell he only had a little bit of meat from chukar he did not eat the night before. His dog was nosing in garbage bags around the back of the trailer and brought out a chukar carcass that had been breasted out. Caldwell asked the subject to retrieve all of the carcasses from multiple garbage bags. The subject recovered 23 carcasses, all with only the breast meat removed. Caldwell cited the suspect for Waste of Game Bird—Chukar. He also issued his hunting partner a citation for No Upland Bird Validation and a warning for Waste of Game Bird, for he had only killed two birds.

Hey I see you are from Oregon.
I was kinda offered a job in Eugene yesterday. I told them I cant do now but may be interested in June. My first question (asking myself) was: how's chukar hunting there? how long do i have to drive? I know eastern Oregon has chukars. But Eugene ain't exactly east. Also: I checked the home prices. Pretty high compared to Sacramento. Am I right? Any info is appreciated.
Summer had reduced the river's flow to a sluggish current. It was well within the banks carved by spring melts, the shallow water running crystal clear. But it was water- life-giving, life-sustaining water. This Calder Range by Janet Dailye
Chukar is generally good to awesome. Most chukar are found on BLM. You do have to cross the mountains to find them . Figure 3.5hrs to get into areas where they are. Gets better as you go east. Some places you can double up on valley quail. There are some remote areas on public land that are close to chukar Nirvana.
If you have to live in Eugene it can get spendy. Springfield is next door and not as bad. Some of the smaller towns and farm properties within a half hour are more reasonably priced.
Places like Junction City or Cheshire or Monroe are nearby and are nice little burgs

It is illegal to breast out birds in CA too, you have to leave a wing attached for species and sex ID. Why would you breast a chukar and not take the legs? THe legs are good!
Chukar and quail hunting is awesome in eastern OR along all the rivers such as the deschutes and john day. I know one campground where you can catch huge salmon and stealhead, quail, chukar, big horn sheep, deer, and ocassional elk all from one spot day hiking! Grouse and pheasant hunting is decent in oregon too. Saw wild pheasant running around the columbia river, I think near pendleton.
Problem is that from eugene those rivers are far, like 3.5-6 hours or more. Also you will have to cross the cascades on a twisty highway. That means heavy snow and rain making the drive suck a big one during hunting season. It rains so much that its really going to limit how often you can go hunting in western OR for a local weekend grouse or quail hunt, unless you don't mind hunting in endless rain or snow. Eastern OR has less snow and rain, it is just really cold. It was only october and bend was 12 degrees when I was there!
The only place in OR I would live is Bend, sisters, and surrounding area. Or medford for the west side, cuz it has a lot less rain.
I think you might be better off in SAC. At least they keep 80 open and its a easy drive so you can get to the east side in hunting season.
Hunting in OR tends to go like this.... Hey want to go hunting next weekend? Wait no, its raining. How about the weekend after that? No, the forecast is more rain. And on and on and on until June and then the rain starts again in october when hunting seasons opens up!

Raingear. Lots and lots of raingear. If you live on the west side you just assume it's going to rain and plan accordingly. If it doesn't, then your that much ahead. With a good set of snow tires the passes aren't an issue. You do have to drive a long ways for most things. I can be in great chukar ground from Redmond in the time it takes someone to drive from Socal to Mendota. Only it's one lane each way and there are no open gas stations for 2 hours of that drive. The people there drive 2 hours just to go to Costco. It's all relative.
If you MUST go dove hunting then the westside is not the place to be. They stack up and we almost always get a rain the day or two before the opener and they boogie for CA. Eastside can be awesome.

If you wear glasses like me a light sprinkle ruins everything. All the rain gear on earth doesn't matter if you can't see. Fogged and rain covered specs end the hunt instantly! I'd have to get laser eye surgery if I lived in western OR lol. On one hand I hate CA. On the other hand there are 300 days of sun so you can hunt every weekend of the season!
