Default Camp Roberts Land Use Meeting

I just ran across this. This was also published in the Paso Robles press. For those of us that use Roberts as a hunting area, we need to send in our letters, make calls, basically speak up.

Seems like the closure of Camp Roberts to hunting has been alot of pressure on FHL. I hope it does open by the end of the year. I have been reluctent to go to FHL hearing all of the reports from you guys on this forum. Although some of you regulars seem to have success, I hear alot of reports from newbies that never see a pig. I will have to check it out after Turkey season though.
    Have fun out there.

Pigs need more time there. When I was there 105 hunters found nothing. Beautiful hunting and I saw every endagered animal known but the pigs were scarce.

Are letters needed to preserve rights or for users to request how they want to use the land. I don't hunt Roberts, but I'm willing to write letters to preserve our rights to do so.

I remember back 5 or 6 years ago on A zone deer season opening at Camp Roberts... Hunters would bring more pigs then deer... The pigs were just everywhere ... I pulled out more pigs in Camp Roberts then FHL.. Smaller so better chances of finding where they cross at... Cant wait till it opens up

I'm not disputing what you said, but I've talked to DFG personnel who are specifically connected to the Camp Roberts Hunting Program, and from what they told me it's not a "done deal" yet.

Letters to the Camp Roberts JLUS certainly will help! You can go to http://camprobertsjlus.com and email a comment to the contact person on the home page.

This is public land, we're not hunting we're hiking with guns.

I talked to Jeff Cann of the DFG who used to run the program at Camp Roberts. He said the National guard has decided not to renew the contract with the DFG. He said they want to run the program themselves. Only problem is they dont have any money to pay anyone to run the program. So if nobody says anything, maybe the hunting and fishing program will go away. I think thats what the National Guard wants.

When they first opened it for hunting back in the 90s, and my first trip there, I found three mountains covered with dead sheep bodies. I was tracking a pig and it lead me to all there mountains. There could be more. There were fresh and old dead sheep bodies. There must have been 200-300 dead sheep on each mountain. Looks like dead sheeps were dumped on a regular basis. Ever since I reported it, there were not more fresh dump. I guess they probably want to go back to re-use the base as a sheep graveyard so they don't want hunters like myself finding and reporting it.

God thats terrible. Any way those of us who care about hunting camp roberts could volunteer our time to run the hunting program? Or maybe limit it to certified hunter ed instructors?

Didn't take any pictures. I only marked it on the map and gave it to the guy running the registration window. I can show anybody the mountains if they ever open up again. I'm sure with that many dead sheep, there's gotta be some bones left buried.
