    Default coyote hunting

Im looking for any help with coyote hunting in the Corona area (Cleveland Nat'l). My son missed deer season because of HS football and we wanted to try coyote. Ive never hunted them before, but see them all the time. Any help will be appreciated.

    Questions:

Anyone familiar with the areas surrounding South Corona?
Any suggestions on best type of pred calls?
Unless I miss read the regs, spotlighting and night hunting is legal in this area right?

    Thanks!

    Kevin

DF&G regs allow night hunting in certain areas, check the regs closely. However, Riverside County forbids the discharge of firearms after sundown. I've been told by a warden to night hunt away from populated areas in RivCo.

Try to get a call that has an instuctional CD with it. That will help with the cadence and setup. The most important thing, IMO, is to be able to sit on the stand completely still. Good luck.

Look up "Varmint Al" in your web browser. His site is getting old but is a wealth of information. He even has directions on how to make an electronic caller with free mp3 files to download and call in predators with.

Hey I've been out in the field several times and need some help on my skills.....if you know what I mean....
Anyone intersted in giving me a hand or willing to spend a couple hours in the field?
I'm willing to travel anywhere within L.A, Orange, Riverside or San Bernardino.

    Thanks

I'm just getting started in this sport myself. ive been doing some scouting out in the desert by coachella and think i might have found a good spot. i also just got some new calls that seem to be pretty good, Primos Hot Dog and Ki-Yi. there are some videos on youtube that will help you get started with them but at the end of the day you just gotta practice. If you can buy and electronic caller that would be a great place to start, but spend the money and get a good one like a fox pro or i have heard that the Primos Alpha Dog is a good one too. Check with BLM to get some maps and ask them of some local places that are ok to hunt. Game wardens will give you some good advice too. Also, maybe check with some of the local farmers and ranchers that have cattle. If they have a lot of dogs on their ranch they want someone to help get rid of em. Let us know how it goes. there is a lot of people on here that have a lot more knowledge and expieriance about coyote hunting than i do but most will not give up there spots where they go. Im pretty new so i dont have a lot, and i dont think i have enough expieriance to teach yet, but if i find some decent ones maybe i can help you out. Good Luck and let us know how it goes.

It is a VERY good site.

If your hunting near "civilization" think about what kind of food might interest the yotes and if your going with an e-caller, load up on what sounds like food. Calls of Incessant yipping and barking of tea cup poodles, chihuahuas, and similar breed dogs would be handy. Varmint Al has a clip of two chihuauas and a chicken in a dustup and that one has been about the best on for me. I had a young yote damn near run over my back to get at it and the year before a large one ran straight in , circled around me, and made a pass at the caller.

As would kitten and cat in distress noises. Even the sound of a trash truck making the rounds through the neighborhood. Those are all potential food sources or the urban yote.

    What orygun says.
Predators have learned to live among us and thrive. You just have to be creative about where and how you hunt. Most of the southern CA areas are limited when it comes to long rifles. But, with a good call and a shotgun most people will find they can be successful along the dges of the NF and private lands. Many foothill areas have rampant coyote problems, or even bear problems(see the current news about La Cresenta and it's 400lb bear).
IMHO, for those who do call well there are many sites on building DIY eletronic calls and you can down load many free sounds including poodle or house cats...
