    Default Repainting decoys

I have a lot of decoys I want to repaint. I have seen video online last year on how to do it and colors of spray paints you can buy for the base colors. Alas I can't find the web site and or the Youtube video. I want to paint Mallard, GWT, wWdgon, Honkers and Speckle Bellies. Any body know where to look? Takem seems to have shut down their painting link.

Good news! Krylon is making palstic primer! I found it at the local hardware store this morning. I picked up some homker floates yesterday and need to repaint them. We now have a better chance to keep the paint o n our decoys.

I will be doing a bunch of decoy repair and repaint in a couple weeks. I have an air brush to do all of the details. If you look at some of the newer decoys the paint scheames are pretty cool how they mimic feather patterns. You can also buy plastic primer from Mark's Paint in North Hollywood, Ca. Home Depots rattel can color selection is very limited. I'll get a can of white and a can of gray plastic primer and tint to the desired color....

Depending on how many your repainting by the time you go through all the trouble and the cost for the paint etc it might just be cheaper to look at buying new ones and save yourself all the hassle...

I use basic rattle can paint that matches the original color. I only repaint 2 colors, the darkest and lightest color for each particular species. I believe having good contrast is the most important thing for your decoys so your spread doesn't look like a bunch of dirt clods. Just my .02

I've started the goose decoys. I have nine floaters right now. I'm painting 5 Canadians and 4 Specks. First I stripped them with Citris strip, it worked great. After I was sure they were dry I primed them with plastic primer. I choose Krylon cammo paint for both. The flat finish worked great. Using black, brown, dark tan, light tan and white primer, they came out great. Now I have hand detail work to do. I need to find out the correct color for the Speck goose beak. I'll use a foam brush for the white on both goose heads, white on the back of the Speck and the black specks on the chest of the Speck. As soon as I get a chance I'll post some pictures. I have 16 shells I've been thinking about but I whiil change at leat 6 to Specks.

I saw this guy last Sunday on an outdoors show shooting snow geese. He's 4th generation in his family's coatings company. They designed the paints for decoys that reflect UV light the same way as real feathers do.

Got some old pictures of before and after in no particular order. I did change the species of some so I could have more of a variety...

Incher I just read that link about the UV paint. I used all sorts of different paints to get the job done. Think the deeks will freak out the birds because of the UV?

I'm going to agree with tis 100%. Paint the dramatic colors and forget the detail work. Make sure the drake mallard heads are green and the bull sprig breast area is white. The rest is just to make the decoys look good to our own eyes, the ducks are looking for the attraction not the detail. Color attracts and movement in the decoys finishes.

Thanks, makes perfect sense otherwise as soon as they saw that the mojo wasn't "flying" I guess they would bug out, right? I liked doing the detail BTW my son really dug watching and helping me look for the details in the books. We both learned a lot about recognizing the different species. Thanks again for all the info.

KRad did you strip off all the old paint completely or just touch them up as is?
