I have a archery cow elk hunt coming up in 12 days in Unit 1. Most of the area was affected by the Wallow fire. Anyone else draw this unit? and has anyone scouted in recent weeks to see the effect the fire had on the elk herds. I am from out of state and never been to the area. I made alot of phone calls early on, study maps and satelite photos but none of this helps me with regards to the current condition of the area. Any insight would be appreciated.
Can't wait to get out on my first elk hunt.
Thanks
Google Coues Whitetail Forum and check it out.
Lots of hunters there live in the area that burned and it's a great source of info.

Thanks Biker, very informative, i'll see if anyone is willing to help with some current info.
I was on the wallow fire in unit 1. Yes it burned but it did not moon scape the area. We had elk all around us in the burn like nothing happened. You will be ok
Wow baco, that's what I needed to hear. I've had the high of getting the tag, the low of forest closure with possibility of not opening and loseing my investment then the high but uncertainty of the forest opening again, good news like that is much needed. Thanks for the good news!
Cjack, Please let me know what you find out there as I have a deer hunt in 27. Good luck!
Jester, My hunt is in 7 DAYS! I will update when I return but from all I hear the fires didn't completely destroy the landscape and had little effect on the elk herd.
Good luck on your hunt. I didn't get drawn again this year.
Recieved a letter from Arizona Fish and Game yesterday with a map of hunt area and a letter explaining the hunt and the current condition of the forest. Even though there are numerous road closures they are allowing hunters with valid tags to enter the area and to cross barracades in some cases. The letter is encouraging hunters to contact private land owners for permission to hunt as these hunts were designed to reduce the impact the elk are having on the crops and cattle industry. This is unlike anything I am used to and I can't wait!
GOOD LUCK TO ALL!
