My buddy does bank clean ups for probates etc. and found this in the attic. I picked it up for a good price. Where can I get ammo for it? May sell it or may get talked into a trade for a 40 cal glock or sig. Anyone know what it's worth? It says Natl ord. inc. under the peep sights

What does the barrel stamp say?
Any markings on the stock? Stamp marks or paint? What does the butt-plate look like?

no barrel markings that I can see, no markings on the stock sling well. The butt plate is cross hatched not smooth so that and the slide are probably GI but the receiver is definitely after market. it has no bayonet sleeve on the barrel but it does have the holes in the peep sight. It has to be surplus parts put together with the National Ordinance receiver... I'll post up more pictures tomorrow .

Sounds to me like its a local firearm, manufactured in the LA area post war.

That is page three of what Dann put up http://www.m1carbinesinc.com/carbine_NATORD2.HTML
The page you posted is page three and is about the federal Ordanance co. This casting is National Ordinance and the options I listed give a clue to the date of manufacture I'm thinking early sixty's with some GI parts. (Slide, trigger, sights and butt plate.) It is a pretty good read and kind of facinating how many times this gun has come back into popularity.

The fact that there is an 'El Monte' stamp on it seems to imply that Fed-Ord put together the parts to assemble the rifle from items on hand; like the N.O. receiver.
Also, all of the original issue GI rifles l have seen have barrel markings. If the numbers and markings do not match, then you cannot verify the date of original assembly.
Ammo is not hard to find. You could even check the banner link to the JHO sponsor; Lucky Gunner.

The M-1 carbine was a VERY cool gun, however, the cartridge is all but useless for anything but combat and plinking. And it's much too expensive for plinking. I agree with everyone else; that's not a mil-issue model. No bayonet lug and metal hand guard are the give-away. But it's still a ROCKING COOL find.

Sweet! I shot one in the 60's (when I was just a lad) that my Uncle brought home from Korea. Don't know what ever happened to it.
Think me not unkind and rude,
That I walk alone through grove and glen.
I go to seek the God of the wood,
And fetch His word to men.
Let us know how it shoots. I've heard they're a hoot!

I have one of those handed down to me from my older brother that move away to Alaska. 6" grouping at 50 yards with Tula and wolf ammo. Win/Rem ammo will be all over the paper target. After 300 rounds, the gas piston and nut came out. The thread in the gas block bald out. The bridge between the edge of the gas block and the notch hole had split apart. One side of the trigger housing with the retaining pin hole broke off. The M1 carbine specialist doesn't want to try and fix it, although I think the bridge can be welded back and re-thread the gas block. I found a replacement trigger housing (stripped) for the exact make and model of my gun for $49. Worst case I have to replace the barrel on mine. One website have an exact same replacement barrel for $100, but I can't justify the $149 in parts + $250 labor to repair it. For that kind of money I can add another $40-$50 and get me a brand new AR15. I would suggest you put it in the safe for souvenir if you want to keep it. And if you take it out to the range, my advise is "do not rapid fire it" because that's how mine broke.
Thanks L2H I will eventually sell it anyway but wanted to make sure it was safe and shootable so I took it to the gunsmith and had it checked out and then took it to the range with 50 rounds and shot at 25, 50 and 75 yds. It shot straight as an arrow but really high. I expect out to 150 yds the drop would be perfect but need to figure out how to dial down the elevation. IT IS A GAS TO SHOOT! The best part is the sound. It sounds just like the sound effects in all those old John Wayne War movies! Got a clip coming mail order and maybe Dave and Jeff and me will go shoot it again. What a great toy! Maybe I'll figure out how to post video up here...

Mine was a blast to shoot until it broke. It seemed the materials and finish of the whole gun is really cheap. It's a nice looking little gun but the quality is just not that great. I usually shoot about 50-100 rounds every time at the range and it's a blast. I've got 1000 rounds of Tula ammo stocked for plinking with this gun. It looks nice with a mini scope. I also used it for pig hunting a few times and it put some bacon on the table. Hopefully I can get it fix.

Mine was made by Iver Johnson also post war which I've done some research on and it boiled down to the same quality as one made by National Ordinance post war. The only difference is that every parts on my gun is swappable with parts from a GI version, although some parts looks different, but it has the same fitting with some needing just minor tweaking to fit. And yes mine has the GI slide with the slide lock. I might replace some parts with GI parts if I could find them in good condition for the right price.
Oh before I forget, you can adjust the elevation on the rear iron sight by sliding the little peep hole piece up and down the ramp. Slide it up the ramp (towards the rear) move elevation up. Slide it down the ramp (towards the front) move elevation down. For windage, you turn the knob on the right side of the rear sight. Turn it clockwise you will see the ramp and peephole move right, that move your aimpoint left. Turn it counter clockwise you will see the ramp and peephole move left, that move your aimpoint right.
Thanks, I moved the peep hole as far forward as it would go and it still shot high. I am pretty sure it may have gotten a little bent. Unless I can find another adjustment I may have to" persuade" it a little. The biggest thing I was concerned about was the groups and how repeatable or not it would be but I was very surprised that when I moved the sights they stayed and I was getting 1 1/2" groups at 75 yds. they were all at the top of the paper...

Now that you know it's shootable, put it on the safe for your collection.study the history of the gun caz it's a nice conversation piece around the camp fire. Almost forgot the one under the bed..the one I dont want L2 to know.![]()

VER' nice, XD. From what little I can tell in your pictuers, that's a true GI model.![]()
