anyone use any of the topo apps. on there smart phones? just bought a android and was playing around, looking at what apps might be useful and stumbled across a half dozen topo applications that could be purchased for under 10 bucks.
Hello Red Dog,
I purchased the iPhone 4 a couple of weeks ago, downloded the Cabela's RECON HUNT Application for $3.99 this morning. It looks like the 24K Quadrangle are free eighths iPhone 4 Application. The new BLM Layer is $99 per year Subscription. I don't know if have been following my maps here on the Forum, but I will be able send my stuff from my RECON HUNT iPhone to your RECON HUNT iPhone.
The features Gear List and Ballistics are too much to list here.

I just found this thread in a search for something on the app ihikegps.com. The GPS in an iphone doesn't need service to work and this app has 24,000 maps to download to the phone. Not sure how big the maps are but I'm sure you can find the right one for your mission. Once you download the map, all you need is power and your set. The maps are USGS and Forest Service. The app is $7.00 in the app store and available for iPhone and Droid. Haven't bitten the bullet yet. Anyone have any experience with this app?

Hello Bobby,
Thanks a million. I have been looking for the US Forest Service maps , that Application is the only one that has them.
I have made up GPX files of the most popular hunting areas, and they can be imported into those smart phone applications. What the heck, might as well have the hunting boundaries too. Just send me a private email through this Forum, and I will attach them.
I just started using Cabelas Recon. Pretty good app with a lot more features then a simply topo. Its still in the development stages but they are adding new things everyday. And they are VERY responsive to input from customers. most features that have been added are from customer feedback.
My favorite so far has been the Gaia Gps app. There is a free version that you can try out and then purchase the full one if you like it. Also if you purchase the full one and decide its not for you they will give you a full refund.
Hello henmar77,
Yes, the RECON HUNT programmers have been working with me too. The SHARE Function is not fully operational yet, but this morning I got an email saying that if I give someone my User Name and Password that they could probably Syncing my 27 trips into their iPhone.
If you want to try it, just send me a
Private Message through this Forum, and I will let Syncing all the hunting areas at Fort Hunter Liggett. They include the paper handout maps and terrain visualizations.
After you sync them into your iPhone it will be interesting to see how my iPhone will react to changes that you make?

Another one here for Recon Hunt - I've been very happy with it (and the $3.99 price tag!). Just bought the BLM overlay for the $9.99 per year - seems to be pretty accurate.
I haven't done much beyond basic stuff - caching topos for my hunt areas, marking waypoints, etc. - but for all those it works great! Only feature I'd love to see them work on is a better way to explicitly cache maps in order to make it easier to ensure they're in memory before losing cell service...
Time is a great teacher; unfortunately it kills all its pupils
public/private land overlay has been a little bit iffy in in Socal. There are a lot of places where it doesnt indicate private land or showing private land where its actually public. Not sure what the program source is but they need to look into it. They were working on it for me but i havent followed up with them on it becuase i was in MN. Also, is anyone else have "renew 1 year subscription $9.99" link still on there app when you click on public land in the app? they said that this is suppose to go away once you pay for it but its still there.
Also for those of you that have an EVO. I just bought an high capacity battery off Amazon for 6 bucks! The reviews were mixed but for that price i took a shot. So far very impressive battery life. I had every app open yesturday and i could not kill it. didnt go dead until 8pm. the only down side so far has been charging it. Took at least 12 hours for full charge.
Well, formally defined, file synchronization is the process of updating computer files in two or more locations. Syncing is two-way file synchronization. It's risky, becasue you could change my User Name and PassWord, which would block me, or you could just delete everything.
What we really need is mirroring, which is one way file synchronization where you could only synchronize your iPhone and not change anything until you break free of me.
There is no way of knowing what Trimble is doing with RECOM HUNT without testing. There is no way of knowing if we can break free from one another without testing. There is a risk!
I had the iPhone 4 and RECON HUNT loaded with 30 Trips. The 30 Trips were all Syncing with my home Wi-Fi here in the SF Bay Area.
When I started the Application in Sacramento with the Verizon G3 (no Wi-Fi) , and RECON HUNT tried to Syncing all 30 Trips even though they were already Syncing. The Application couldn't complete the operation, which made Recon Hunt useless for navigation.
Maybe G3 is too slow, or something? I wouldn't trust my life with it using G3, and the claim that it will navigate with no cell service at all.
Be sure to carry a paper map and compass.
The Verizon G3 Network couldn't handle the Syncing operation, and I didn't have the option not to Syncing.
Maybe for one or two Trips it would work, but not for my 30 Trips. When I got home my Wi- Fi did the Syncing in a few seconds .
Right now I'm at Mac Donald's and they have Wi-Fi. Where do you hunt up here? I will send you a few GPX Files to make Trips in your RECON HUNT. Then it will syn.
I got Recon Hunt for my Droid 1 and am still playing with it. Is there any other option for acquiring maps than simply looking at a spot and caching it to your SD card? It would be kind of nice to simply download an area (say, Topographic) and it's there. It's kind of tedious to scroll around in an area at one res and then increase the res and do it all again. Any ideas?
It's good to have a plan. That way you have something to change.......
myfriend
Send me an email with your favorite hunting area at FHL, and I will attach my GPX File. The Cabela's/Trimble RECON HUNT site is a server for your Droid when it's running the Application.
When you upload my GPX File the server will synchronize your Droid and you will see the hunting area on your Droid screen. Then you will be able to navigate to the hunting area and navigate to stay inside of the hunting area.
It's pretty slick once you get some useful hunting information uploaded.
I don't hunt FHL for the simple reason I think their program is a ripoff. (Paying a yearly fee to put in for the elk draw on the mil side really torques my lug nuts) I hunt VAFB, and I also hunt in Wyoming and Colorado. That's what I was looking for in downloadable maps. Sorry I wasn't clear.
It's good to have a plan. That way you have something to change.......
OK, CaliJeephunter is working on the VAFB Hunting Area Maps. You will have to wait for him. I can do it sitting here in my family room, but it's a shot in the dark if I have never put my feet on the ground.
The younger generation can do the GIS stuff while sitting in an office, but I think that someone may someday drive over the edge of a cliff. So, I don't do the fancy GIS stuff.
I can send you a GPX File of your favorite Deer Zone Boundary. That will anchor RECON HUNT to something, and then you can take it from there.
I'll dog Nick out. His Dad is my hunting partner. I told them about this app a couple of days ago, so if he puts it on his Droid X maybe that will light him up to add VAFB to it.
It's good to have a plan. That way you have something to change.......
My boy still hunts at FHL, so that's why I went heavy with the Training Areas. He's still in college, so I let him use my Cabela's Account when he needs something.
The RECON HUNT Application uses the same User Name and Password as the my regular Account for ordering stuff.
My boy has the Droid and I have the iPhone, and we can both use the Recon Hunt server at the same time. The only problem is when navigating. We both must navigate to the same Waypoint.
I wanted him and his buddy to start a separate account, but the new account would not synchronize my Trips and maps into the new account. What I will have to do is log into my boy's empty account and load all my maps manually.
