i am buying a 7mm mag rifle and someone mentioned having a muzzle break done to the barrel...slots cut into it...helps with the recoil...what excatly does this do
Others that shoot the 7 Mag can chime in, but I don't usually hear of brakes installed on that caliber.
Here's info on the muzzle brakes in general:

Think me not unkind and rude,
That I walk alone through grove and glen.
I go to seek the God of the wood,
And fetch His word to men.

A muzzle brake is actually threaded onto the end of the muzzle. Threads are cut into the outside diameter of the barrel and the 'brake is threaded on. You can expect to pay about $150 or so to have this work done.
A competent gunsmith will assure the crown is correct, thread and install the 'brake and contour and finish it to match your existing barrel.
I have one on my .300 win mag; it kicks less than my .243. Everyone that has shot it has been flabbergasted that it works so well. Three of them have had 'brakes installed on their guns as a result. Be warned: they are incredibly loud! At any distance though, they are actually somewhat quieter as the blast is omnidirectional.
My best friend had a 'brake installed on his 7mm mag, but it really didn't need it.
It's good to have a plan. That way you have something to change.......
Some like them ,some don't. They are loud! Once you do ,it's done. It's a 7mm mag, you should be able to deal with the kick. practice makes perfect, after you hit the range a few times you.ll know what to expect and won't flinch. Try a limbsaver first. I personally.. like the kick of a magnum. Some people just buy too much gun and have to make corrections, but with a 7mm mag you willl be fine.
is there a big difference between a 30-06 and 7mm mag...shooting..outside of the cost of rounds....plan on using for elk-bear mostly
Within bullet weight, there is really very little difference between the two. You can shoot a 180 grain bullet effectively out of the 30-06, but are really pushing things to shoot a 175 out of a 7mm mag (IMO). Velocities are a hair lower with the 30 caliber, and the .284" diameter is a bit higher sectional density for slightly better downrange ballistics, but again, they're pretty comparable.
