Default Where and When to Hog Hunt

Thought i'd post this for a friend, i haven't been to crazy of hog hunting but heard its GOOD to eat, i've learned of bear and deer season info but not hog.

We are in Socal in near Riverside, is there a opening date to hog hunt? i guess tags are available over the counter, are there specific zones or areas to only do this?

    Thanks

Hog season is year round in most areas except those that the State/Fed regulates. Best is to go to the DFG site and read the regulations. Since most of the popular hog places are private your friend will end up paying a guide or trespass fee, but there are some public areas that people have success. I'd read through this section to gather any glimpses of information.

Welcome to the world of wild hog hunting. Sojo has some good advice, and do a back search here on JHO and there will be more than enough info to get you started. Especially read the posts about hunting or seeing hogs in so cal and you will learn the good, the bad and the ugly...
I live in one of the best counties for hog numbers, but after four trips to private property in the last month, where we were told "they were there" and saw a load of sign, I came back empty. That is hog hunting at it's best, sometimes you get em and sometimes you don't even see any...
I love hunting them and I think they are the best for eating of any big game animal, but even though I see them right outside of town almost every night, they can be very elusive.

The best way to learn to hunt hogs, if it's your friends first time is to hire a guide if he has the money. He will have better chance of seeing a pig as well as harvesting one with a private ranch, if you cant aford a guide then check out the fish and game websits for more information. You will learn years of hunting experience if you hunt and talk with the guides and will save allot of time trying to figure out what their habits are and what it takes to hunt them. You can check us out on the web and see if that is something that you want to do, if so give us a call and we will let you know what dates we have open.

I find it easier to hunt hogs during the wetter months where I live. They root everything up when it's wet and easy to spot where they eat/travel to and from. It also seems like they come out earlier in the eve and stay later in the morning when it's wet and cool.

Hogs are the hand maidens of Satan. That said, its a hoot...when you can find one. I prefer the spring months as well, Feb-May. They seem more active as the days get longer and the fresh greens are sprouting.

For the newbie hog hunter, best to start with someone that knows whats going or hire a guided/private ranch hunt, and then pump the guy for all the info you can.

As SoJo mentioned, Hog hunting is year round in California (DFG regulations section 368), with no bag or possession limit; the season is open statewide. You only need one pig tag for each pig you want to shoot - oh, and a place to shoot it.

IMHO, the very best way to learn how to hunt wild hogs successfully and have any chance of actually scoring on one, is to go with a guide. Yes, it costs money but what you will learn is priceless and their career is based on your success...
