    Default First abs of 2010

I didn't dive but my friends got limits. Fresh abalone in the pan, a roaring campfire and good friends. I'm the luckiest man on Earth.

A special thanks to everyone from JHO who has helped me along the way with diving. A new obsession......... I hope to meet some of you out on the water.

Never had any, is it like a big scallop in texture and flavor? I googled on how they are cleaned. Do you use the "scraps" for bait or something?

I love seafood, hope to try some abalone sometime.

Abalone is not much like scallops in my opinion. The only way we cook them is to clean and slice steaks about 1/4", then pound them well with a tenderizing mallet. Then they steaks are breaded and fried quickly in hot olive oil. They have a unique taste....not fishy, but rich. I'm not sure what to compare them to.

The guts and scraps can make excellent bait. If were fishing, we use them, always freezing some for bait if we dont use them right away. Excellent bait for surfperch and rockfish.

    Thanks b-n-d.

Every time I've put any kind of shell fish on a hook in FL, it was eaten quickly (sand fleas included). Figured the Abalone would be the same.

Now I really have to try to find some to eat, it sounds interesting.

Well let me know if you ever come out to the north coast pal. We'll fix you up.

Good job Bux! We need to take a day trip sometime up to Salt Point, and you can always borrow or rent gear if you don't have it.
