    Default deer or boar

    hey everybody,

i was scouting an area for upland game birds a couple days ago. at about 6pm i was relaxing in my truck glassing a pair of quails, then all of a sudden i hear snorts about 4 or 5 snorts. i couldnt believe this was a wild pig because the land is arid desert and not known for pigs. there are hardly any watering holes just intermittent brackish streams.

could this be a wild pig? after a minute or so i left my truck and went into the bushes to see if it was a pig but i guess it left already left. im not telling where i saw it because i still have a pig tag to fill. but its in socal

Deer will snort in alarm. That's probably what you heard. They'll blow too.

PM me with a location and I'll ask my unit biologist if he/she's heard of any pigs in that area.

Brackish streams in Southern CA? Salten sea or by the coast? It's possible to find hogs anywhere in CA these days...

Hog droppings look like your neighbor squatted down in the bushes. When the grasses are in it looks like horse apples. The rest of the time more like human scat.

410, You should go to the doc for a checkup!!! I could maybe see describing hog scat as "human-like" but that's even a little stretch.

If you google wild hog scat you should be blessed with a better explanation.

I've only heard a buck grunt a few times but I've heard deer blow (snort) more times than I care to remember. Usually it's them sounding the alarm once they smell/hear/see you.

Was pig hunting last year up around Hopland, CA and was glassing a ridge. Heard some movement in the brush and "snorting". I thought forsure it was hogs, it was two does that showed themselves.

wtf is he gonna do with the location? Check and see if pigs could live there? This is california, Hope that was a joke gone bad.

Deer make a snorting sound thats sent many a pig hunter into the frenzy...usually, but not always its a deer.
I used to hunt out near Temecula, and I saw some sign out there, but never lucky enough to see any pigs. They're out there, sometimes where it seems they could never survive.

Both pigs and deer "grunt" at times, so do alot of other animals. Deer poop is pellets or packed clumps, pigs looks like human logs.
Deer tracks are more arrow head shape, pigs are more wide and rounded like cattle. Pigs stink when you get up close to them or near their fresh poop.
And the sightings of wild hogs is getting more wide spread every year...

Too bad it never seems to be me having all these pig sightings....crosshairs are getting cold.

Grapes do always seem to equal piggys...maybe I could bring a small baggy of snacks along for my next nature hike....

Ouch, now I feel like an a-hole. Thanks, and sorry.

I see so many people asking where someone last saw something, I figured this was yet another.
