What a shame. Anybody still venturing south of the border any more? I quit going down about 6 years ago for the desert racing and fishing, it's just gotten too crazy.

    A truly sad situation.

I don't hunt or fish down there, but if I did, this story and all the other stories about these murders would certainly have me questioning any trip.

I also think about all those "spring break" kids going down there. While most places they head too should be safe, I would not allow my kid to go right now. There are "safer" places to go.

And, it is sad for the hunt guides and outfitters.

A mess all the way around.

Didn't we loose a JHO member a couple years back down there?

Sad situation. I don't have to travel there for work since it is not safe. I used to go 3 or 4 times a year.

Haven't been down below Mexicali since Jan 1st 1991. Had my 13 year old at the hunting camp we'd used since 1985. At midnight the AK-47's started cranking off down the road in town on full automatic. Sounded like I was back in the forward area again. None of the federalies that I saw carried AK's they all had M-16's!

Last time I got jacked up at a drug check the Federalis had FNs. 1994 maybe. I have seen them toting M-16 and a lot of US gear and using US vehicles

Was down just about every other weekend from Sept to Feb. and never saw anything scary. The number of hunters is way down so almost no pressure. Bird numbers are way up with a epic pheasant and quail hatch. The military is all over the place but interactions with them are pleasant and courteous. Gun checks going into Mexico are simple and fast with knowledgeable agents checking papers. I still feel safe and will continue to go.

The only trouble this year was on our side of things. The BP guys twice asked for our export papers on the shotguns. Lucky for us we had them. You have to go down to customs office in Long Beach and they give you a form and inspect your guns.

I wish everyone who still goes out there all the luck in the world. The mexican army is with the bad guys but they still have a reputation to look after. But if you are around with guns the bad guys will soon find out about it and they have nothing to worry about. They will take them away in heart beat. ITS NOT WORTH IT!!!

We don't have to go down there, it is here...

Recently there was an AZ rancher killed by illegals/drug smugglers.

damn earthquake kicked everyone's ass....... just hope my house is still upright and not flooded.

You people who love to bash on Mexico with zero first hand knowledge are kinda funny. Mexico has a huge problem with the drug gangs that supply us with drugs but its not as wild west as the TV would have you think. In Northern Baja to the best of my knowledge there were zero problems this last year.

they must think the same of us when they hear about Hemet Ca. and how the gangs are more or less at war with the cops.

    Aeonstar,
Hope you found your place was ok. I had a friend sent me some pictures of their camp we used to stay at and they took some hits. Had a crack run between the apartments and the lake that was up to a guy's waist. Also Highway 4 was tore up between the San Flepie highway and Victoria.

yup we got lucky and no damage to our place and very little in the campo we are in. Amazing since the epicenter was more or less under us. A lot of folks have not been so lucky with a lot of flooded homes, cracked foundations and walls. With the aftershocks many are living outside in tents afraid to go back inside.

just to clear up what i said in my other post. Last year there were no problems in northern baja with Hunters!...

Ive been going their now for 12 years or so. Every year i tow the boat down to the Chivato area, just north of Mulege. Last summer went down with the whole family in the Lance and the boat all the way to the east Cape for almost a month, what a good time that was, the kids had a blast. And we have never had ANY problem the bad guys. The fishing is great. I have yet to get into any hunting while down their but i will be giving that a shot in the near future. Just my 2 cents.
