Man, those flat-tops are sweeeeet. Makes you wonder why they didn't think of that in the 60's when the rifle was new.

nothing special about mine. I pretty low-end AR and three cans of $5 walmart paint and a few hours of painting. I used wood chips for my "pattern". Just wiped down entire rifle with alcohol, masked areas i didn't want painted. painted rifle in tan. then threw it on ground, sprinkled some woodchips and twigs on it. light uneven spray of dark brown, wait 1min, wipe off stuff, repeat with dark green, and again with tan. The Krylon Camo dries so fast you can do all three coats in 5 min or so. I don't like defined lines or sharp contrast so i purposely use my hands to wipe off the woodchips and since the paint isn't completely dry it blends it a bit.

photogun.jpg This is my AR 10, just got done building it. Not a very good picture but the build was a lot of fun. Expensive fun at that. I just got done reloading a bunch of 7.62 ammunitions for it and my mag blocks just came in the mail so I won't be breaking the law in Ca. Well I will be heading out to the range Monday for a test shoot. I have a Bushnell banner scope 6x18. This is just a temporally scope. I am saving for a lepould Mark 4 or a night force. I have not decided which one yet but I got plenty of time to save some cash. The upper is a DPMS, Magpoul stock, Harris bi-pod, CMG trigger,Rock river arm scope mount. I really like the CMG trigger, I have one on my AR 15, great trigger.

Completed what you see just yesterday. Next, up a Grendel upper and a few changes on the lower. Its like art. Its never done, you just stop working on it.

Here's my stock DPMS LR 308 AP4 minus the rear sight handle and an Aimpoint red dot attached.

    uploadfromtaptalk1353783491122.jpg

Since this picture I've added a Gieselle trigger. I have a Troy free float battle rail I'm going to take to the gunsmith next week to have installed (I don't have a vice or the special DPMS wrench to get the free float tube off with). Once that's done I'm going to grind the front sight, add a T-pod G2, a DPMS compensator, and sight it in with my Leopold and call it finished.

Looking good BF. I bought a tool kit from Brownell's that has all the necessary tools/wrenches and vise block to work on your AR. I figure I'm always tinkering and hate to have to schlep the rifle down to a gun shop just to have a barrel nut taken off. HEre I think they wanted $40 to change my hand rail. $99 for the kit. They have a sale going till Monday with 10% off with order over $150 so you might be able to swing a deal too.

What do you mean by "grind your front sight"?

It's safer and easier in a vise when torquing barrel nuts like that. Sure you can do it in your lap, seen a few shop accidents with guys who went the cheap/easy route.

I'd love to get the tools myself and will one day, but almost everything I need is sold out and any money I can save will let me buy the compensator and grip/bipod I want sooner. My local gun store will do me right and won't charge me an arm and a leg.

I will get the wrenches and vice blocks one day. I foresee myself getting addicted to customizing these guns.

nothing to do with being cheap. Several people i know do it this way. Including some that i dont, that work at geissele. tightening the nut can be done on the floor if its carpeted. all the principles are the same. applying torque in opposite directions. I have all the shop equipment i have built about 10 or 11 ARs since my first thread and this is my preferred method. especially when its hot in the garage. to each his own.

I see some guys string trad bows by puttin a limb through their legs to pull up on. They do this until they crack a limb, they they buy a bowstringer.

To each his own as you said.

I'm calling it "good enough" for now. Got my Troy battle rail on, the front sight grinded down, a brand new Leopold VX-III, a four round mag (to make it deer-legal), Geissele SSA-E trigger, and a bipod scavanged off another gun.

I think I'm ready to take it buck hunting.

Sweet BF, now you got me rethinking my optics for my latest build. Did you take off your front sight or grind it down? Why grind it down?

I had my gunsmith grind it down. I didn't want to shell out more than $50 for a clamp-on gas block and I didn't want to go with a cheaper set-screw block because I'm told they aren't as stable as clamp on or pinned blocks.

As for why I wanted the sight gone, it was in the way of my night scope. It catches the IR illumination and makes a halo effect happen in my field of view.

Both my night scope and this scope have quick detach rings so I can go back and to in the field.
