Default Transfering gun ownership in CA

I am getting my grandfathers old guns. They are all shotguns and rifles and they are coming from Virginia. I live in CA and I want to register them just to be legal. I thought the previous owner and new owner have to be present to register the guns in a new name. Anyone know how I can get this done without having my grandfather in CA.

As far as I know, I did not think California law required rifles and shotguns to be registered.

Only handguns are required to be registered.

There have been active efforts to make any type of firearm come under a registry, but this has not happened yet to my knowledge. Most often this kind of legislation has been defeated on 2nd ammendment infringements.

If it has changed, it is new to me.

It is my understanding that parents and grandparents can transfer firearm ownership to you without any waiting period or paper work.

Inheriting weapons from a relative is the only exception to the rule regarding registration. As long as the weapons are California legal, no paperwork is needed.

CAn anyone varify that this is still true? Want to get my dad a sidearm, wondered what happens if he passes away after that, given he is already 70 years of age?
Would paperwork be needed at that time?

If I was buying a handgun, I would have my son purchase it. That way when I pass, there would be no paperwork for him to worry about.

Your best bet for a foresure response would be to research it on this website.
