I have hunted Mexico numerous times in my younger days, but it has been quite a while. I want to hunt the Mexicali/San Telmo Valley area and was curious what the licensing fees are these days. We normally hunted dove, quail, and pheasant. Can anyone give me an idea of licensing fees and what guide they recommend? I remember hunting Mexico without guides and it was fantastic for hunting and the pocketbook. Any help appreciated.

I have heard that the gun permits and fees were around $280. Pheasant tags (you can harvest 8 per tag) was around $120. Doves $60 and quails $80.

kfd,
I'm planning a last minute trip down to Mexicali for quail this coming weekend. I'm planning on hiring guides since I haven't been down before. Pheasant season ended ~Dec 31, quail is open until Jan 12, and I think dove goes til the end of this month.

kfd,

one of the applications I have to hunt has this language in the payment form. Take it with a grain of salt since it's coming from an outfitter, but I've heard similar rules from other guides...

"According to Mexican law, each non resident hunter must be contracted by an authorized Mexican outfitter. (Article 96, General Law of Wildlife).

ALL hunting in Mexico must be done through an outfitter, no more DIY.
Most outfitters supply shotgun and shells so all you have to do is show up, no more gun permit hassels.
I recommend BajaHunting with Arturo Malo

glass eye,
I just left a message for arturo about this weekend. He's been a little hard to get ahold of over the holidays. Have you hunted with any other guides in the mexicali area?

I second Arturo as well. Great operation.

He might be a bit more than others but his area is safe, he speaks perfect english and I don't have to worry about getting ripped off. That is worth a premium to me. His hunting is also fantastic.

Qbn,

I was quoted a two day hunt by Arturo for $1500 for quail & dove including gun rentals, shells, lodging, guiding and meals.
He definitely sounds like the most organized outfitter, but that is out of my range.

I talked to a guide named Carlos Mancilla. Has anyone hunted with him?

Wow Pablo thats pricey. For about that amount of money you can hunt the entire season. I have use Pepe Tapia before as an outfitter and Javier as my guide. Here's a link for the Baja Tourism site. Thers a list of the outfitters in the area.

Pablo,

Are you going hunting before the end of the season? How much is Carlos charging? And were are you staying in Mexicali? Are you staying in town or at one if the ranches?

Qbn,

We're hunting this weekend, staying at the Lucerna hotel. I'll provide a full report on Monday when i get back. The price works out to be around $100-200/day depending on how many boxes of shells and how many extras are included. I'm flying blind on this one, but the hunting isn't the primary reason for the trip so if it's a bust, I'll chalk it up as a learning experience.
