Finally brought my 2005 CA black bear home from taxidermist. It was killed in Ventura County, aged at 13 years, and scored 21 3/4.
Wanting a more natural look than some mounts, I settled on a Van Dyke lifesize sitting without rods. It doesnt require a base and is easy to move around. Eliminating the need for a base reduces the cost too.
As always, the wife is not impressed with another mount so it will reside on the bed in my office with my 2005 tule elk.
nice one loren,i was wondering what was up with that big old manikin sitting on the floor of
the shop, how big of a pain in the arse was it to stretch the hyde over that sucker
did you dorsal cut him in the field or belly cut?
you did that mount?
BORN TO HUNT
Nice mount, I have never seen one done that way. Was it hard to do? Way cool.
Congrats on the bear..

The mount was done by Ojai Valley Taxidermy. I did help wrestle the hide on with Chuck as it was his first time using the form. The form only came out last year.
The bear was skinned up the belly in the field. It is really the easiest way to prep the hide for tanning. A dorsal cut requires more work as you have to open up the legs for tanning anyway.
I was glad to have selected this form as not having a base allows it to be moved easily by myself to any location.
I was just getting ready to ask if Chuck did that mount. I recall seeing it when I was up there one day. Nice bear.

Now that is a new one on me--very cool! Might be a cool deterrent in the event of a burglary... :-)
Congrats on the fatty!
Any day in the outdoors is a damn good day.

Very cool! Thanks for posting the pics.
Nothing man can do could ever equal the glory of God's creations.
Depending on your age, my first thought was: I hope the grandkids don't poop themselves when they see/meet it ! LOL![]()
I know you can't eat the horns but the meat on the wall looks terrible and after a while it begins to smell.

Trample the weak and hurdle the dead.
Sweet bear. Chuck does some amazing work.

I remember seeing that bear when I dropped my deer off at Chucks place. I hope to be picking my buck up next week.
