The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is deciding whether to allow private wireless companies, including telephone companies and broadband providers, to operate in the "Upper Millimeter Wave Band." ###This is the only area of broadcast spectrum that accommodates pencil-size radio waves. ###It could deliver up to 12.5 gigabyte Internet access to locations as far as 12 miles away from an antenna. ###
The debate includes whether to create licenses for this spectrum or make it free to use and whether to share this bandwidth with the military and other U.S. agencies, which have exclusive rights to it.
